Check coolant level, also fill reservoir with coolant to cold fill line, check radiator for coolant flow, check electric fans for operation. alot of times when a vehicle stays cool when driving is because the air is flowing through radiator fins and the waterpump is circulating the coolant which keep it cool. when vehicle is at a stop or stand still the coolant is not full and will not flow through the radiator nor will the air cool it. your likely cause is low coolant in radiator,

Check the coolant reservoir and the radiator for proper coolant level. If low you probably have a leaking intake gasket or possibly a head gasket leak. The intake leak will be visible on either end of the intake manifold, located at the very top portion of the engine. The head gasket usually shows up at the rear head, nearest the belt. You could have a water pump leaking and this would show coolant on the ground under the right front of the engine, more so when the engine is running. They are very common for all 3 problems.

The 1999 Chevrolet Venture that I'm driving has a temperature gauge that goes to the hot mark and reads low coolant. I just had a mechanic change the thermostat yesterday and I am still having the same...

have the fault codes read to confirm the mechanics diagnosis
I am suspicious that the car runs hot, looses coolant but the mechanic did not do a compression test to check for head gasket/ cracked head problems
From you statement ,I am thinking that the car has overheated , and blown a head gasket at no 5 cylinder

Could be the Thermostat that causes such a problem. Try to change it with new one. Good luck

The heater doesn't work very well on my 2000 Chevy Venture van. I'm wondering if I should try replacing the thermostat. Or, it is all computer controlled now.

If heat gauge reads normal, stays in the middle, then you do not need to mes up with the thermostat. I own a 2000 Chevy Venture and changing the thermostat was not fan.
It may be the Temperature Control Module, which you can buy for $45 and replace without problem, or may be an partially obstructed heating core. The GM Dex-Cool antifreeze, the read one, has additives, but if you do not flush the radiator every 2 or 3 years, can result in partially clogged heater core. I have done on my car twice till now, and replaced with green Prestone, on my own risk. Hope this will help. If need more information let me know. A have the Haynes manual for Chevy Venture 2000, and I am a car dealer.

Engine does not appear to be hot. Gauge says extreme heat

try replacing your temperature sending switch. That it what tells your gauge or idiot light where to read or light to come on. It may have a short in it. Or a short between the two.

2004 Chevy Venture overheats

check the make sure you have no air in your system if there is an air bubble trapped in behind the thermostat your thermostat wont open and your car will heat up and stay hot while letting a small amount of coolant through the bypass so it wont overheat

1999 Chevy Venture airbag light stays lit

You need to replace the airbag clockspring. It is located inside the steering column and is fairly easy to do for the home mechanic. Be sure to disable the air bag system!! You can find this part that any parts store, for about $100.
