1998 Skylark wont start, but turn over (clicking from alternator) battery fairly new.

Can you turn the engine by turning the alternator or water pump ?
If the engine turns freely, could be a problem with the cables to the starter or the starter itself.

CHECK IGNITION SWITCH 40 MP FUSE AND STARTER FUSE LINK.CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE.MOST TIME IF BATTERY POLARITY HOKED UP WRONG YOU CAN FRY RADIO, ALTERNATOR, ECM, AND THE IGNITION SYSTEM.

Have your starter checked,also make sure you are getting battery voltage and Ignition voltage to your starter solenoid.

There should be a click sound from the engine to know that you have the starter relay going. If there is none check that out if it is working or if the wires are connected properly. If there is check out the starter motor if it is connected properly or if it is working at all. Check also the ground wires if they are connected properly.

More Information pleas, but I think it might be the neutral safety switch. Try starting the car in Neutral and see if it starts, if it does you need to have the NSS, replaced.

how is your alternator working. have this tested for free at you local part store, they will even take it off for you in some places and put it back on. Also most good autopart stores have the computer to test your system and give you a free diagnostic report so they can sell you the parts. good luck

Does it crank and not start or not even crank. You could have a bad starter. I would test the battery first. When it won't start try to jump start it. If it jump starts it's probably the battery. If it won't jump start it's probably the starter.

i check to make sur ur fuel pump is working if you can hear running the i would try chevron techron injector cleaner and make sure ur spark plugs n wires r good
