This can have several causes. I assume you have checked the coolant level, so next, have a mechanic, or Autozone or similar, scan the car to see what the digital trouble code is. I do believe there is a difference between a maintenance light and a check engine light. You can take your vehicle to most parts suppliers (auto zone, pep boys) and they will check your computer codes for free.
