its a long process for the novice. I suggest getting a repair manual at your local autoparts store to help in your troubles. The process includes finding the timing marks, partial disassembly of engine to access timing belt/chain. To sum up the process, you disconnect your battery, remove timing chain cover, line up timing mards on camshaft/crankshaft which could be dots, marks or grooves, replacing the belt/chain, and reassembling engine. You might want to check if that engine is an interferance engine first. Most of the car diesels in that era were interferance engine meaning if they jump time or belt breaks, it usually wipes out the valves as they hit the pistons until the crank stops turning.
