I need to locate the fuel filter for my 1988 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 liter, V6 cylinder W/ 4 wheel drive. Please help. I need to make it to class. Thank you, Mr. Jeff Rice

They stopped using in line, external fuel filters in 1997. Your filter is an integral part of the fuel pump assembly, which is inside the fuel tank. Are you sure you need a filter?

Losing power when I accelorate.

Fuel filter is the main culprit when you lose power going uphill. Going level or downhill means that the engine doesn't have to work all that hard and doesn't demand much fuel, so a partially clogged filter can usually flow enough to allow the car to run smoothly. Going uphill requires signficantly more fuel, and if the filter is clogged up, it won't be able to flow enough fuel. This will bog the car down and cause you to lose speed. Change your fuel filter.

Drving at road speed

Step 1

Check fuel pressure. If you have over 80,000 then just replace fuel pump and filter. Fuel pump is in the tank so run out as much gas as you can.

Step 2
Also do a tune up plugs , wires ect... if you haven't already.

1988 cherokee chugging.....

Rust in ther filter means rust in the tank. There is a primary filter attached to the fuel pump inside the tank. Before you go further, replace that filter & wipe out the inside of the tank as well as you can.
Then check operation of pump and how it runs.
Good Luck
