there is no external fuel filter on your jeep, in 1997 they changed the design and put a filter sock over the fuel pump intake in the fuel tank. they only get changed when you end up replacing the fuel pump
They stopped usingin line, external fuel filters in 1997. Your filter is an integral part of the fuel pump assembly, which is inside the fuel tank. Are you sure you need a filter?
2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD 4.0L MFI 6cyl: The Fuel Filter is located under vehicle, driver side, below bed area, front of
fuel tank, mounted on chassis in fuel line.
Fuel filter is the main culprit when you lose power going uphill. Going level or downhill means that the engine doesn't have to work all that hard and doesn't demand much fuel, so a partially clogged filter can usually flow enough to allow the car to run smoothly. Going uphill requires signficantly more fuel, and if the filter is clogged up, it won't be able to flow enough fuel. This will bog the car down and cause you to lose speed. Change your fuel filter.
Rust in ther filter means rust in the tank. There is a primary filter attached to the fuel pump inside the tank. Before you go further, replace that filter & wipe out the inside of the tank as well as you can. Then check operation of pump and how it runs. Good Luck
