Automatic transmission Hello there. My 1999 chevy malibu was garaged for 11 months and now is having some transmission problems. It shifts too early from P to R and to D and it makes a noise as it hits something when it desengage from P. Shifting from D to R and 1 to 2 to 3 and to D is not a problem. The problem seems to be engaging from P to R or D. Also after about a minute it starts driving you could feel when it goes from one gear to the other (only one time after it starts driving and the other gears shift perfect). The car has about 65,000 miles and it is in perfect condition otherwise. Any idea as to what it may be or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    My 1999 malibu has 80k on it and just started having transmission problems the mechanics i have taken it to dont know if its the whole transmission. it has trouble once in gear going up and often RPMs exceed 4000 and speed doesnt increase. does this mean i need a whole new transmission? i bought it used a year ago for 2500 and cant afford anything above that which is the cost of a transmission. how much could i get for the car alone?

My 99 Malibu is doing the same thing... it turned out to be a transmission pressure regulator. $400 it was fixed.

I put my 1999 malibu transmission in drive. there is a large clunk then does not shift out of the lower gears. when i attempt to manually shift it slips in high gears.
car showed absolutely no symptoms until this point?.

You don't yourself. The lube change shop or garage can do this (requires special tools or removal of the pan). for a 2005 you're likely in need of a flush. some models can have a dipstick installed, but its not necessary. Unless you have a serious leak of fluid or shifting issues, it's rare to lose fluid. If you are having issues, then start with a flush and inspection BY A REPUTABLE GARAGE. do not use a dealer or transmission shop, they will always find ways to seprate you from your $$$

check fluid level, make sure proper fluid is in transmission otherwise take to trans shop to diagnse if level and type is correct(check at idle normal operating temp)

99 Chevy Malibu - auto trans - no dipstick
You have what is called a closed cased transmission. You have to crawl underneathe to get to the tranny and remove the upper bolt close to the side of the case (more towards the bottom of the transmission). When you fill it, you fill it till it starts to drip out of that hole.

Check engine light came on and now shifts hard from park to drive
The engine light is telling you, you have a transmission problem which sound like a shift solenoid. If you take the care to a local garage or dealer you can have them scan the vehicle for the problem code, which will tell you which solenoid is bad.
