SOURCE: 2002 Buickj Century the gear shift light is out
This is the most known and common problem from this car... even on ebay they have fix it sales for this. What happens in the back of your cluster is the 4 small resistors that control the dimming of the cluster eventually burn out or become disconnected. Again you need to send it in to be fixed unless you know tons about these things. Sorry my friend but there isnt anything else you can do about it i had the same darn problem with mine also

Odometer light is OK but shift position is erratic. Going from P to R does not show and going to D will work sometimes but not going back to P. So have to shift by feeling the number of clicks from P or from Neutral and car does not move. Very annoying.
I have the same problem. My 2004 Buick century's odometer & gearshift lights ar out, the rest of the dash lights work, from the looks of the internet this is a wide scale problem for GM in general.
My 2002 Buick Century is doing the same thing, the GM mechanic said $400 parts and labor. I'm not happy. If this is so widespread why not a recall, we should get the bailout money!
Buick Century Odometer, gear selector not lighting, or dim Buick Century 1999-2004 Have an issue where the Odometer does not light as for the gear selector too. Four resistors will burn out, as each burns out the odometer gets dimmer till all go out. Fix is easy. You tube provides the instructions: GM Electronic Gear Indicator and Tripometer Odometer Cluster Tools Screwdriver, Slotted and Phillips 25w Solder iron Radio Shack - Obtain (4) 150 ohm resistors Rosin Core Solder De solder ribbon ------------------------------------- Remove negative battery wire. Remove front dash ( one screw passenger side under the fuse cover rest are clips). Remove the console cluster (4 screws and a data connector) Open and remove the circuit board Locate 4 resistors right side four are under each other. They are the small circuit resistors but the ones from radio shack will work. Some will be gone, others fall off with a touch. Bend leads of new resistors, cut to size and solder in place. Reverse order to re install Test , wow brighter then ever.
