High Pitched noise

There is a high pitched noise coming from the underside of my 2002 Audi A4. This is not coming from the engine compartment. It makes the noise while idling and is not affected when I accelerate. It started this winter during and unusually cold spell...It went away when it warmed up and now its back again, This only happens about 50-60 percent of the time...Any thoughts what might be causing this.

I have a high pitched noise as well. While driving it seems to come from the right rear, or the underside of the vehicle. It is independent of speed, terrain or whether I am stopped. While experimenting to discover the cause, I sat in the car and merely turned the key to turn the car on without turning the engine over. The high pitched noise started then died. So I believe the sound may be a fan bearing. Current may get supplied to the fan, starting it spinning then it stops, thus the sound stops. When the engine is turned over, the fan then just continues to spin and causes the noise.

The folks at the dealership said they couldnt find the noise. Something I found unacceptible, but I don't trust mechanics anyway.

My 2003 Audi A4, 1.8T is experiencing a high pitched whine seemingly from the underside of the vehicle as well. This occurred after a few weeks of intensely cold weather, and an over-the-road trip of nearly 250 miles.

I hope you all are right that this problem isnt severre.

2008 Ram 3.7 6 cylinder. Hi pitched noise on startup and acceleration coming from engine. Doesn't seem to affect driving conditions. Been advised to look for possible vacuum leak.

I had a high pitch noise, didn't sound like it came from the "underside". Turns out it was one of fans that had little chips in the blades? My Audi dealer replaced it, and it's fine now.
