The alternator on a Lincoln can be done as follows::

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable with an open-end wrench.
  2. Loosen the bolts that secure the alternator to the engine and bracket with a socket wrench just enough so you can slide the alternator along the bracket. Move the alternator forward on the bracket and take the alternator belt off the pulley.
  3. Remove the electrical wiring plug from the side of the alternator, pulling it straight out from its fixture. Unfasten the nuts that secure the ground wire and the electrical wiring connector to the alternator with a nut driver.
  4. Unfasten the bolts that secure the alternator to the engine with a socket wrench and slide them out. Take the alternator off of the bracket and remove it from the engine compartment.

If you want to install a new alternator, do the following:

  1. Install the new alternator onto the engine bracket with the bolts, tightening them just enough to allow the alternator to move freely on the bracket. Reconnect the electrical wiring plug into the side of the new alternator.
  2. Reattach the ground wire and electrical wiring connector to the alternator with the nuts. Put the alternator belt around the pulley and pull back on the alternator (a small pry bar may help). This will apply tension to the belt.
  3. Retighten the bolts that secure the alternator to the engine and bracket with the socket wrench while applying tension to the belt. Reattach the negative battery cable to the battery post.

UNHOOK BATTERY! REMOVE THE WIRES FROM THE BACK OF THE ALTERNATOR! REMOVE THE BELT FROM THE ALTERNATOR! ON TOP WILL BE EITHER A 1/2 INCH, OR 9/16 BOLT ( REMOVE IT), THEN ON THE BOTTO, OF THE ALTERNATOR IS A 5/8 BOLT POSSIBLY WITH A NUT AND WASHER ON IT! REMOVE THAT AND PULL THE ALTERNATOR OUT! SOME HAVE A BUSHING BETWEEN THE ALTERNATOR AND THE MOUNT BRACKET! BE SURE NOT TO LOSE IT, IF IT IS THERE! YOU'LL NEED IT FOR THE NEW ALTERNATOR!

Step by step instructions replace alternator on a 2000 Lincoln Continental

Hello, first of all disconet your battery. Then locate your alternator and remove the wiring. You will then see two bolts, one is for your fan belt adjustment, take this bolt out and dont loose it. The second bolt is much longer, this is the bolt that allows you to move your alternator back and forth so that you can tighten your fan belt. Remove this and as you pull it out hold onto yoour alternator as it will now come out. You then position new alternator sliding long bolt back in place. Do it up but not tightly at this point. Replace the smaller bolt and make sure that you put your fan belt back on. Pull the alternator tighly onto the fan belt before tightening the smaller bolt. Once the fan belt is tight you can then tighten the long bolt. Reconct your wiring, reconect you battery and you should be right to go. If theres a squealing sound when you start the car you may have to retighten your fan belt, you dont need to take any wiring off to do this. I hope this is helpfull.

Why does my instrument cluster black out a lot? The digital cluster often goes black while driving. I have no idea of the mileage, gas, or anything else when it blacks out. Any ideas would be greatly...

Having the same problem with my 2001 Merc Cougar, When does it black out? While reving or randomly? Mine is while heavy accelerating. Could be over voltage at the charging system (alternator or regulator) or internal in the cluster. Get the alternator and batt tested first, ask for a load test, then try the cluster next.
