My power steering went heavy whilst driving at 50mph and i cannot drive it myself as its too heavy without power steering ('05 peugeot 307 cc) I have checked the power steering fluid which is at max and there are no metalic bits floating in the fluid so i do not think its the steering column/rack. Is it likely to be an electrical problem or the power steering pump? Any help, advice and estimates on prices would be very helpful. Thanks, Jo

Hi Jo,the power steering is powered by the fanbelt and if its slipping will cause it to go heavy but a light would come up on the dash to tell you the alternator was not charging.so if not the belt,it could be the electrics for the pwr steering need looking into, this is easier to get on the dealers diagnostic computer which will show up the exact fault.and would save any guesswork.

These have electric pumps and are not driven by a belt, pump failure, or relay or fuse , start there, if not water in multi plugs , abs connection, or Bsi unit, all control the power steering pump.

How to fix an electrical circuit fault on peugeot 307

Test charging circuit (usually for free at parts store). A battery getting drained can cause much of this. With car sitting still you could try removing fuses one at a time to see if there is an unusual draw.

Citroen saxo furio pwer steering fault. Started intermittently. now not working at all. initially not working when starting engine , then kick in with a **** whilst driving. then after parking and stopping...

Hi
is it leaking from anywhere, quite common o saxo's they leak from the steering rack, they have a small circular seal that go's and drips fluid out of the bottom.

It is also quite common on saxo's for the power steering pump to fail, it's the same on the peugeots, this is most likely the cause so get that checked first, you can get one off ebay for about £30 and they are fairly easy to fit.

Hope this helps

Dan
