My 1996 Chevy k1500 won't go in reverse and doest want to shift when it warms up. Do you know possibly why? It has four wheel drive and an automatic transmission. The size of the motor is a 5.7. I've looked around the internet and someone posted on a web-site the same problem, but also noted that they had problems with the brake lights and someone else suggested something like replacing the brake light switch (I think). This truck has had the same problem with the brake lights but that was fixed before I had problems with it not going into reverse or wanting to shift when it warms up.

SOURCE: Transmission Slipping?

Putting it in four wheel drive does not eliminate the transmission. Honestly, it sounds like the transmission is on it's way out. A 4l60e in one of cars was acting the same way. It required a rebuild.

SOURCE: 1994 CHEVY K1500 BRAKE LIGHTS DON'T WORK TOP CAB LIGHT WORKS

I figured out my problem!
From the VERY BEGINING... I changed my brake pedal switch with a BRAND NEW switch, and the lights still didn't work.

Well, I went back down there with a live wire and touched the contacts..and guess what.. the brake lights lit up!

I got a faulty NEW brake pedal switch!! I went a year with this problem, so learn from my issue, test even your new parts if it doesn't fix the problem to completely rule it out!

I hope you guys figure out what's going on with your issue.

SOURCE: 1996 Chevy K1500 4L60 Transmission having problems

The vehicle speed sensor is not working, it is located in the transmission tailshaft. The computer uses this speed info to shift the transmission, and tell when the rear wheels are locked up so the ABS will function.

1991 K1500 won't shift into 4WD. Shifter moves and linkages are connected all the way to the transfer case, but no 4x4 light comes on and doesn't shift into 4x4. Where do I start looking for the...

on the front axle you should be able to find the shift actuator. It will be threaded into the the housing on the passenger side of the pumpkin. There will be a two pin connector. Make sure there is power to the connector with the vehicle running and in four wheel drive. Also make sure the ground is good on the connector.

If you have power and ground replace the actuator. These are very common to fail on early GM's. Your local NAPA should have them instock. They are called "four wheel drive actuators".

If there is no power check the 4x4 fuse. If there is no ground trace the ground wire to find the open circuit.

If you have any questions i'll be happy to answer them.

1996 K 1500 with manuel four wheel floor shift will work in four low but will not work in four high (what could be the problem). Dan

so the front driveshaft turns in 4 low? or you just feeling gear reduction in 4 low?if the front drive shaft will not turn in 4 or 4low then suspect a shift fork broken. when i say turn i mean under engine power.

I have a 1996 chevy blazer and dont know how to disengage from four wheel drive to two wheel drive?

As I recall the 96 blazer had electronic shifting for 2wd to 4wd. There should be a small panel on the drivers dash buttons for 2wd, 4wd lo and 4wd hi.

Simply press the desired button while stationary and if the system is functioning properly then it will shift and the light for the engaged type of drive will be lighted. Generally you would like to be in 2wd for this vehicle.

The four wheel drive on my 1996 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Z71 doesn't seem to be working. I can shift the floor shifter to 4H or 4L and no indicator light comes on and it is only in 2wd. What could be the issue?

Check the 4WD fuse and the illumination fuse in the I/P fuse block. Also check the Transfer Case Switch and the Front Axle Actuator for a fault. I would say that the Front Axle Actuator is the most common failure. I think there is even an updated actuator asy available. Check with you local chevy dealer for price and availability.

98 Chevy K1500, four wheel drive floor shifter won't engage.

I had the same problem with my 98 z71, I put the floor shifter in neutral, and let the truck roll backwards a little bit, BE CAREFUL, with the floor shifter in neutral the truck will roll, regardless if the shifter on the steering column is in Park, use caution, make sure there is no one around your truck and you are inside of it and out of the path of doors and tires,
