Not a very good sign it needs to be looked at by a mechanic I no your looking for a easy fix but if you contiue to drive it running hot you risk destroying your car i could name off some things that could be makeing your car run hot low in water due to a leaking in radiator or hose could be a water pump a cooling fan may be bad but what concerns me is your saying your car is shuting itself off if you crack the head on your cars engine its very expensive to fix it have it checked out asap before you destroy car I gave you a honest answer to your question
Is your water/antifreeze mixture correct and full? take of radiator cap when cold and start motor as i warms up the water start to circulate if not stuck thermostat or bad water pump. when the car heats full up does it blow steam and water out of the tail pipe? check the ol level does it look milky? either of the last two indicate a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. bye from sunny austin tx
