It is likely you have a defective speedometer cable, pull the end out of the ****** and turn it with your fingers and have someone watch the needle, it should jitter a bit, turn it clockwise and counter clockwise while you do this test, replace as needed, the cable is cheap and is available here. ATP Part # Y805 Price $11.71 (USD) Source www.rockauto.com

Most likely problem is the neutral safety switch coming apart. There may be additional problems. Get a scan of the computer and post the trouble codes.
Get it scanned, will tell you a lot. Willing to bet its a speed sensor of some sort which would explain the speedomoter not working. You can get the car scanned at autozone if money is an issue, dont drive too long with the problem so you dont ruin the transmission.
You most likely have a faulty speedometer transducer, or loose/poor connections to this unit.
The unit is generally unrepairable - replacement required.
The transducer unit is mounted on the gearbox at the tailshaft drive output.
There is a short somewhere and an auto electrician should be able to track it down Could be the board in the dash unit or a wire rubbed through Hard to find!
