Steering wheel lock stuck, key won't turn

My 740 wagon has has a lot of problems but this one gets the prize. I was driving as usual and parked the car, shut it off, and went inside for a while. Came back out an hour later to drive home and the key won't even pretend to turn now and the steering wheel is locked. It has an anti-theft device on it that I've always been able to get past- turn the key while rocking the wheel, but now my car is stuck on the other side of town. A friend of mine who thought he could help couldn't figure it out. Why does my key not work anymore and the wheel won't turn at all?

Thank you thank you! This solved my problem. I have a V70 and I parked it on a steep hill and cranked the wheel toward the curb. When I tried to turn the key in the ignition it would not turn and the wheel was in a tightly locked position. Wouldn't budge -or so I thought. The best solution was right. I pulled the wheel INTO the steer and it gave with some resistance as if it was on a spring. That was all I needed to turn the key in the lock.

Did you try just pulling the wheel to one side? If wheels are turned too far one way mine will lock up like that too - turn INTO the steer and then try to crank. Hope that is all it was! I hate my anti-theft and am tryin to have it completely disables - who is going to steal my '91 volvo???

SOURCE: steering wheel lock stuck, key won't turn

Try Turning steering wheel hard the direction that the tires are currently headed and turn the key. I have had the lock jam because the wheels were turned and had to lay on the steering wheel to finally get it to turn.

Key stuck in ignition car stuck in park key won't go to off position

There may be to much pressure on the steering wheel lock for it to go into the off position. put the parking brake on. put the shifter in neutral gently turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction of where the wheels are pointed and try turning the key to the off position. Good Luck

I have a 95 camaro, I put the key in ignition and it will not turn the ignition. It's like it's stuck. Replaced the ignition module and still cannot turn ignition. Help!

the ignition module (ignition switch on top of the steering column) normally doesn't get stuck.

things you can try:
steering wheel lock: (the pin gets a "burr" on it and locks everything up) wiggle steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn key.

transmission lock (parking on an incline will jam up the interlock)
push the shifter farther into park while trying to turn the key, or wiggle shifter

99 malibu, key won't turn in ignition (it's new cylinder and casing that worked fine before I changed gear shift back to park and connected the battery)

Shake ya sterring wheel from side to side and try turning ya key. The lock could be stuck and needs to be freed up. This should do the trick.

Ignition stuck key won't turn to start car!

Gear shift is not totally in the park position - had the same problem with a 2011 Acura TL - a rubber band kept the gear shift lever from totally seating in the park position.

My steering wheel locks up when I put it in park, and when I try to restart it, it won't crank. The key won't turn. What do I need to do?

grab the steering wheel and turn it left or to the right and sometimes you might have to put a little effort in it but one way the steering wheel will move about 1-2" and as you are moving it with one hand take the other hand and turn the key and it should turn a lot easier.this is a common thing and if you can try to have the wheels straight and try not to use the steering wheel to get in or out of the vehicle and the wheel should not lock and make it so hard on you.you have to use both hands at the same time one moving the wheel and the other one turning the key but start moving the wheel in the in direction that it moves the most then turn the key.

Locked Ignition but steering wheel free

Push gear selector up past park and it should loosen up, or press hard on the brake pedal. Shifter up past park usually loosens it up. Common GM problem.

Steering wheel lock stuck, key won't turn

Dude, just take a rubber mallet and hit the key moderately. This will fix the problem. I had the same thing go wrong with my van.
