Hi all, Today I was driving on the hw and heard a grounding noise for less then a second and then everything seemed fine. Later when I went out down the street about two miles I was in line at Mcd's and the car would not move. Nothing worked reverse, dive, low or 2nd. Had to push it to a parking spot where I shut it off. Could smell something but started her up again and I could drive it for only a couple of minutes. It did the same thing. Needless to say, I did the same thing shut it off and cool down and got to work which was only about 50 feet and left it there. I know its the transmission but how can I drive it for a bit and then it drop. Also, do you have an idea of how much this is going to cost me. The car is only 8 yrs old and has only 88000 miles on it. Thanks!
Well, there could be several reasons for this... The first could be that your speedometer cable is broken. That is if your speedometer is cable driven. (Some automobiles are digitally operated.) But, if yours has a cable, A second reason could be that the cable could be kinked in the cable housing. Another reason could be that the cable may have been disconnected from the rear of the dash, also, where the speedometer cable goes down to the transmission, there is a place where the cable attaches to the transmission... There is a small gear inside the transmission, just where the cable attaches to. Sometimes, these little gears wear out, or also break. Also, the teeth on the gear can wear, causing it to slip, thereby, causing your speedometer to not work. That is about all I can think of. I hope this helps you.
Get your VIN number (Vehicle Identification Number) located by the windshield of your car or on your registration certificate and then call a Toyota dealer and he/she can tell you which model of transmission that should be in your car. Then purchase a transmission pan gasket for the model they tell you should be in your car and see if it matches the transmission pan in your car
