I have had a P0420 code on my 2005 Colbalt and I have had it explained fully to me now I HOPE ( geez the first mechanic did not give me all of the details previously!!) and now I know that this code came on after the first prob with the colbalt which was a part that burned out and caused only 2 cyclinders to fire-- thus causing over rich mix fuel mixture to be dumped into the emissions chambers for a sustained period of time and now causing MAYBE prob with catalytic converter. My question is I have had an analysis of the code and the emissions lite shut has been shut off and now I have to wait to see if it comes on again? The mechanic says that mite be never again whichis a good sign, But How do I know how much damage was caused to my catalytic converter? How do I trust the lite system to come back on if it has been shut off? Will it do it and I mean not just to show I have a prob now but in the futre with anything else? I GUESS I am asking 2 questions here!!

Well u said that i ran rich for long period of the time. there's no question that it got some damage. like he said u need to run the car until all the monitors check out. turnin the light off doesnt fix the car because is like doing a scan and if there is a problem the car computer will turn ur engine light on again. Because of the misfire the oxygen sensor and the catalytic converter may have damage this damage could been caused because to much unburnt fuel going into the catalytic converter also clogging the oxygen sensors. next time u see the check engine light or any warning light just give urself a break stop at any autoparts store they will scan the car cpu and give u advice before any damage is done.

replace the catalytic converter

The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar.

P0420 NISSAN - Catalytic Converter Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

The most common cause for the OBDII code P0420 on Nissan vehicles is the three way catalytic converter Bank 1 has reached the end of its useful life.. Since this is a very expensive part you need the code fully diagnosed as some other things like exhaust leaks or poor engine tune can cause it as well

P1148 P1031 P1279 P0420

Well looks like all 4 codes point to the O2 sensor bank one sensor one.
Code 1148 and 1279 are for problems with the performance of the sensor, code 1031 is for a problem with the heater in the sensor, and code 420 is for poor performance of the catalytic converter on bank one which could also be the sensor.
I would probably replace the sensor or switch it with the one on bank two and see if the codes change.

Receiving engine code p0420 on my 2005 altima 2.5 s

A p0420 code indicates a Catalytic System efficiency failure, Bank 1.
Basically, the computer is seeing reduced efficiency of the catalytic converter or one of it's components (such as an 02 sensor)

There may be a few root causes, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, faulty coolant temperature sensor, faulty converter, Large exhaust leak, or retarded (slow) timing.
