The shutting off of the engine, is to prevent the "heat" from causing any further damage to the motor.
It is supposed to do that.

The overheating, could be many things, including, but not limited to a bad alternator, that would keep the fan from coming on, bad thermostat, no radiator fluid, etc.

    water pump,bad fan motor/bad fan, lol, I will add more as they come to me:)
    Mine is doing that as we speak, and so far all signs point to the thermostat...altho it seems to be opening and closing now.
    Damn car...lol~
