I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. When I fill the tank the gauge reads a little over 1/2 full and the range meter states 221 miles till empty. What could be the problem?
Actually I had that problem, its a faulty fuel sensor, and can be replaced under warranty. at first they had me unplug a fuse while the car was running then shut it off and plug it in then start the car. did that for 2 more fillups b4 they finally replace the faulty sensor.
This is an old post so not sure if problem has been resolved ?? but if not ? from your symptoms it sounds like the fuel tank sender unit is faulty and unfortunately not servicable but not too expensive to diy a new unit for a quick confirmation it is sender ? remove the wire from sender unit then scratch /hold to good earth whilst ignition is turned on and fuel guage is read by assistant ? if guage goes to full ? sender is faulty hope this helps?

Fuel gauge does not give a true reading same time engine light came on I can fill the tank with fuel and the gas gauge fluctuates
