I have a jeep grand cherokee 1999 model 4.7 v8, I am getting the pcode1698, but it drives great. I failed inspection due to me plugging in a reader and erasing the codes. My failure was due to o2 not ready, and o2 heater not ready. I took it to the shop, and they said that it was a bad alternator, but when they put on a new one it reacted the same, If you unplug the alternator while it is running the computer reads good, but when you plug it in it spses the computer out. I need some real help, gota get it inspected

Ok i found some information pertaining to this and other related issues. You may want to give it a read, it will tell you where to start. if anybody has changed the car stereo... or added an Ipod adaptor to it.. where the harness plugs into the back of the radio...

what do the letters mean..

DTC.. diagnostic trouble code
DRB the advance scan tool that works with chrysler built cars and trucks..

P-1686 NO SKIM BUS MESSAGE RECEIVED
When Monitored and Set Condition:

P-1686 NO SKIM BUS MESSAGE RECEIVED
When Monitored: With the ignition on.
Set Condition: The PCM does not receive a CCD Bus message from the SKIM when
expected.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

PCM

INTERMITTENT CONDITION

CCD BUS CIRCUIT(S) OPEN FROM PCM TO SKIM

LOSS OF SKIM COMMUNICATION

conditions that set the DTC are not present at this time. The
following list may help in identifying the intermittent condition.
With the engine running and at normal operating temperature, monitor the DRB
parameters related to the DTC while wiggling the wiring harness. Look for parameter
values to change and/or a DTC to set.
Review the DTC When Monitored and Set Conditions. If possible, try to duplicate the
conditions under which the DTC was set.
Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that may apply.
Visually inspect the related wiring harness. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or
partially broken wires.
Visually inspect the related wiring harness connectors. Look for broken, bent, pushed
out, or corroded terminals.
Were any of the above conditions present?

there have been broken wires found in the rubber boots between the door jam and the doors...
i should explain.. THE WHOLE jeep is wired with computer signals.. to operate devices..

go through and identify exactly .. WHAT DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
P1687 No Communication with the MIC
No BUS messages received from the Mechanical
Instrument Cluster (MIC) for approximately 25 seconds.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Symptom List:
P1698-NO BUS MESSAGE FROM TRANS CONTROL MODULE
P1698-NO BUS MESSAGE FROM TCM

Test Note: All symptoms listed above are diagnosed using the same tests.
The title for the tests will be P1698-NO BUS MESSAGE FROM
TRANS CONTROL MODULE.
When Monitored and Set Condition:

P1698-NO BUS MESSAGE FROM TRANS CONTROL MODULE
When Monitored: Equipped with automatic transmission, the ignition key on, engine
running, transmission in drive, vehicle road speed and battery voltage greater than 10
volts.
Set Condition: No bus messages from the TCM for 10 seconds, two trips required.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

INTERMITTENT CONDITION

COMMUNICATE WITH TCM

PCM

before replacing ANYThing.. identifying anything that does not work properly ... then go to the EXACT factory service manual...

be cause of the failure could be a LOT of things..

with a factory service manual in print.. or a digital version on some tablet .. and some advanced scan tool that will talk to the CAN system... ONLY using a digital volt meter and a LOGIC PROBE.. NEVER a test light... and knowing what connector you are about to probe..

identify what does not work.. use the scan tool to test that circuit.. you might also want to just check the connectors.. the grounds.. the relays... the IGNITION Switch..

intermittents are hard to find.. takes 2 days.. to set a code.. what exactly were you doing when the code set...

warning.. a lot of shops start with the expensive stuff.. and work toward the cheep stuff.. diagnosis of the spider web of CAN controlled circuits.. and careful monitoring of each of them ..

if you don't have a decent scan tool.. and you cannot find any broken wires.. you will probably want to buy the factory service manual.. and possibly an OTC scan tool.. #3499N.. as not all the consumer scan tools will do what you need to .. and the ads won't say that they don't.. it may need a trained tech before it is all said and done if you do not have the needed tools.

Replace O2 sensor. They have to be really hot in order to read right. Did you ensure to drive around a good 30 min to make it hot?

The crankshaft position sensor was seriously problematic in those old jeeps. It's located towards the top of the bell housing slightly to the driver's side I think.

SOURCE: How to replace sparl plugs on a Jeep Cherokee?

Hello, I hope this info helps...(subytech1)...REMOVAL
In this engine, each individual spark plug is located under each ignition coil.

  1. Prior to removing spark plug, spray compressed air around base ofignition coil at cylinder head. This will help prevent foreign materialfrom entering combustion chamber.
  2. On this engine each individual ignition coil must be removedto gain access to each spark plug. Refer to Ignition CoilRemoval/Installation.
  3. Check condition of coil O-ring and replace as necessary.
  1. Inspect spark plug condition. Refer to Spark Plug Conditions.
CLEANING
Theplugs may be cleaned using commercially available spark plug cleaningequipment. After cleaning, file center electrode flat with a smallpoint file or jewelers file before adjusting gap.

CAUTION: Never use a motorized wire wheel brush to clean sparkplugs. Metallic deposits will remain on spark plug insulator and willcause plug misfire.

ADJUSTMENT

Setting Spark Plug Gap - Typical
Check spark plug gap with a gap gauge tool. If the gap is not correct,adjust it by bending ground electrode. Never attempt to adjust gap bybending center electrode.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: This engine is equipped with copper core groundelectrode spark plugs. They must be replaced with the same type/numberspark plug as the original. If another spark plug is substituted,pre-ignition will result.

Special care should be taken when installing spark plugs into cylinderhead spark plug wells. Be sure plugs do not drop into plug wells asground straps may be bent resulting in a change in plug gap, orelectrodes can be damaged.

Always tighten spark plugs to specified torque. Over tightening cancause distortion resulting in a change in spark plug gap or a crackedporcelain insulator.

  1. Start spark plug into cylinder head by hand to avoid cross threading.
  2. Tighten spark plugs to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) torque.
  3. Before installing coil(s), check condition of coil O-ring andreplace as necessary. To aid in coil installation, apply silicone tocoil O-ring.
  4. Install ignition coil(s). Refer to Ignition Coil Removal/Installation.

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD V8 4-wheel and there is a "rattling" sound coming from area of the left front tire.

Is this the same problem you were having a year ago, or was that a bad tire ?
Usually a rattle is caused by something loose, such as a strut mount or a ball joint.

4 wheel drive quit at some time didn't know it...drives fine only rear wheels pulling..could it be electrical ??

I hava a 1999 Grand cherokee loredo V8 with full time 4wheel drive. when the rear tires slip I am hearing a poping noise in the front end when the 4wheel drive engages. I was told by one person that it could be the chain in the transfer case slipping but I was told by a jeep salesman that this year jeep did not have a chain. Could this be the CV joints in the front axels?
