1995 jeep wrangler 2.5l, 150k From neutral, can not shift directly into 1st gear, I have to slam it kind of hard into 2nd and that allows me to shift easily into first gear. Once moving the shifting is pretty smooth. 2 mechanics have told that I need to get my slave and master cylinder replaced and another one has said that I should replace it all (I think he just didn't want to take it all apart just to replace the slave, wants the money). Dont have the money to buy a completely new clutch but am ready to replace the slave/master cylinder. I just want to be reassured that it would help my clutch last longer. I really appreciate any advice you would have to offer!

It appears from your description that it is a clutch operation problem
in that it is not disengaging properly to allow the clean selection of first gear
that amounts to air in the hydraulic system, faulty slave cylinder or faulty clutch master cylinder
unless you have oil on the clutch plate causing it to stick or a dry or seizing spigot bearing in the flywheel( possible ), there is no report from you about a clutch problem( slipping , shudder smelling hot)
At this point replacing both the slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder would be the fix especially if they have not been serviced since manufacture
take it to an accredited brake /clutch specialist shop for diagnosis /quote
some vehicles have the slave cylinder internal in the bell housing (very bad and repair costly manufacturing idea) and if that is your case , the transmission will have to be removed to replace it
should that happen and as the box will be out , it will be cost effective to inspect the clutch at that time

SOURCE: 88 wrangler wont shift

Clutch pedals have a safety interlock switch that keeps a manual transmission vehicle from starting. It sounds like the pin on the bottom of the shifter in the trans is getting worn and needs to be replaced. You can remove the boot on the shifter and the cover on top of the trans and see the pin. It's a simple matter of getting the pin out and installing a new one. Just make sure everything lines up good on the install and everything is clean. Another thing that may be the culprit are the synchronizer plates could be worn nearlt out. To replace or fix this you will need the trans out of the vehicle and tear it down. Start with an inspection of the pin and the linkage as well, then if it doesn't work correctly then you may have to tear into it.

When was the last time the transmission fluid and filter changed? I would have that serviced first. If it is an electronic transmission, the line pressure might also have to be reset.

I was driving to work this morning and was in 3rd gear, went to down shift at a stop sign and its stuck in 3rd gear. 1988 jeep wrangler. It has been grinding the gear for a few weeks now everytime I change...

The 3rd Gear Synchro is worn or damaged, which is why it grinds when you try to upshift or downshift into 3rd gear. When it goes out completely you will have a very hard time shifting into 3rd gear, since the Synchro lines up the gears to make shifts smooth and easy.

Shifting lever doesnt lock

Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

'99 wrangler has trouble shifting to 2nd gear - 4th gear occasionally slips to neutral

If you can see where the shifter goes through the floorboard, make sure the shifter is not hitting the floor.
There could be interfierence under the car also.
