Belt tension is adjusted by moving the alternator away from the water pump. Loosen both alternator bolts (don't remove them) and place a pry bar or wooden handle between the alternator body and the engine block. GENTLY apply pressure to move the alternator away from the engine - when the belt has less than 1 inch vertical play, tighten the alternator bolts while maintaining tension on the alternator. If proper tensioning doesn't solve the squeal, then I would suspect the new belt is contaminated with oil or grease.

My 65 mustang stalls whenever i stop then it starts right back up

Hello Larry,

Without the car running... You should be able to open
the throttle.. and literally DROP it back to idle...

Observe the action of the THROTTLE RETURN
DASH-POT
T should visibly SLOW the RETURN
of the throttle linkage like a door closer...

If you do not SEE the slowess... the dashpot
should be replaced (they are getting SCARCE).

SIX CYLINDER (EXAMPLE (only))

You will need to have the THROTTLE RETURN DASH-POT
on your (unspecified) carburetor
tested and adjusted... and the IDLE SPEED correctly set.

Idle Speed and a slow rate of RPM reduction is
critical to the proper function...

Some LESSOR "mechanics" will attempt to raise the
IDLE SPEED to compensate for a malfunctioning
DASHPOT... This will PROFOUNDLY exacerbate
the problem.

Serpentine belt on '97 3.8 Mustang pops off idler pulley even though everything appears to be properly aligned after A/C compressor replacement.

If the idler and nearby pulleys are all in-line, not excessively worn and the axis is exactly at a right-angle to the belt run the belt should not pop off, therefore either the idler or other pulleys are worn tapered or sagging or it is possible the belt has become stretched on one edge.

You could try turning the belt around so it is traveling in the opposite direction and see if it makes any difference. Some idler pulleys will also turn round if required.

I hope this provides food for thought.

The normal way to tension it is by loosening the alternator and retightening it with pressure on the belt. On older cars, the best way is usually to put some pressure on it using a wooden handle of some sort wedged between the block and the alternator. If there is not enough travel for the alternator to tighten the belt properle, take the new belt back and ask for one thats an inch or so shorter (almost all parts stores can application match belts)

Can pulleys on a 2005 v6 mustang become unaligined and cause the belt to come off?

Not unless something is loose somewhere. If you had a belt break or slip off, you will need to replace the "belt tensioner". Once a belt tensioner has had a belt slip off, or break; it will damage it. It will never work properly again, and will need to be replaced. If you keep buying belts, every one will eventually slip off, or break, until you buy a new tensioner.

My mustang is smoking and making a screeching sound.

You have a Bad Belt Tensioner and will need a new one and Possibly a new Belt. Have the Alternator Checked also. It could have gone Bad during these Problems. If the Tensioner is Not keeping the Belt very Tight it will not allow the Alt. To charge the Battery and it will drain very fast.

Replace fan belt

Here is a diagram http://www.2carpros.com/car_repair_information/tec_info/2002/ford/mustang/2002_ford_mustang_drive_belt_routing_diagram.htm
its pretty simple use a wrench/hex which ever applies to the nut that on the tensioner some vehicle have a regular bolt type and some have a hex. Just follow illustration and push on tensioner using proper tool and release tension and belt and the belt will come and replace using the routing diagram I provided. Good Luck and Thanks for using FIX YA contact if you need more help.
