My 2004 Camry was squealing, so we checked all break pads. The rear tires were bare so we replaced them along with the drums. It was fine for a week but now we have a very high pitch-louder than last time-noise while driving, when I hit the brakes it stops. Any suggestions?
Roll down your windows so you can tell if it is coming from the front or back of the car (driving next to a wall of a long building will make this easier to determine, like the back of a shopping center). Once you have determined what end of the car the sound is coming from, either look through the cutouts in lyour wheels (if you have cutouts) or remove a wheel from that end and look at your rotors for damage-they should be flat, without gouges. Even if you don't see any damage, it still could be there-on the other side of the rotor (inboard), and if you reach up in there and feel around the backing plate, you'll be able to feel any ridges your worn pads might have created. If you have drum brakes on the back wheels, you will need to pull the drums off to inspect the insides of the drums for damage. You might end up pulling all four wheels, but the evidence is there-you will need a brake job, and probably a new rotor or drum too.
Did you check the brake pads? Sounds like its metal to metal and no brake pad lineing.
Brake pads need replacing, if they are ok, you will find a small stone or similar in between your pads and discs, very common but make sure you check your brake pads first
Sounds like the brake pads may be worn out in the front. Make sure that there is not metal to metal contact that may score the rotors. Also, check the shoes and drums for the rear brakes if so equipped.
If you need instructions on how to disassemble, let me know.
