My new BMW 3.16 (20100 makes a whistling sound over 50 kmh and then at 70 km. They changed the differential in November. It seemed OK at first but it started doing the same sound. The mechanic says 3.16 is an advanced new technology machine and that's why it makes this sound. I am not convinced. Can you help?

Its been my experiance in the past, if its a front wheel drive, that one of the CV joints is going out, check the ones on the side of the car the noise is coming from.

SOURCE: Stuck in first gear.

Sounds like transmission may be in "Limp Mode" which occurs when problem detected in transmission, to allow you to get to repair shop and save transmission at same time. Have it diagnosed at dealer or transmission shop & don't drive it any more than needed until then. Transmission replacement gets very expensive so get it in to shop a.s.a.p. so it doesn't get to that extent, and it may turn out to be a faulty sensor or something minor.

My 2011 BMW 328i Is making a loud whistle sound with rough idling. The whistle is loud like a tea kettle. It makes this noise after i drive it for 10 min or so. Can you please help?

Sounds like a vacuum leak has developed in the intake system. While the engine is whistling, using a spray bottle with water and on the mist setting, spray along the intake manifold area and vacuum hoses to locate a possible leak.

BMW whine noises 70mph

Hello Robert Anderson,

I always ask the color when my friends are describing their car... and immediately ask the interior color too...
It helps me imagine their following sumptuous description...
Twin-turbos, 8 speed automatic, Walnut grain...
fuzzy DICE... Plastic idols affixed to the dash (etc.)...
all helps in the visualizations

but... for your car I imagine a noise.

Okay... a 70 mph whine usually means the rear end differential gears have gotten out of alignment.

It could mean a few other things... but that is the biggie!

Hope this helps!

I had my differenctial rebuilt like every thing and have a noise again at about 70-80 km. When I back of the gas it stops

No you shouldn't. If all that was replaced. Lift the vehicle and verify it is coming from the diff. If so, take it back. You didn't mention the vehicle, so there are many ways to torque the pinion bearings in. Do you have straight axles or CV axles. This all makes a difference. Also, if the shop diagnosed it and it isn't fixed, take it back. Don't pay for a bad diagnosis. Diffs aren't cheap. I know. I build them.

2001 Nissan Sentra XE: Automatic Transmission Fluid I've searched the Owner's Manual about changing the ATF. It provides the intervals for checking and topping up the fluid, but as for REPLACING...

no, its not maintenance free, you still have to check the fluid level, and change the oil and filter in the transmission about every 50 to 70 thousand miles(due to the fact your not towing or having to to the car). This just maintenance that should be done. The fluid will break down over time, and need to be changed. The filter needs to changed in-case of getting clogged. Yes, dirt, and stuff do get in. When you take the car to your mechanic for the transmission filter and oil change, ask, they should check the differential(should you have rear-wheel drive). As for us, its part of the service package. We do the complete change for one price(oil, transmission, check ALL fluids, (older cars get greased) tires and tire pressure). Ask them what is all included in the job, and the total price. You can get great deals that way. I hope this helped
