Actually. Yes you can lubricate the joints. The answer is if it feels "stiff at certain points throughout the turn off the wheel, then it is definitely the u-joints in the steering shaft. On my 98 crown victoria p71, I used "pb blaster" and LOTS of back and forth (lock to lock) to "free the joints" then a good wipe down followed by heavy saturation of "white lithium grease " the kind in a spray-can. This will do wonders for the steering "feel". After it's feeling nice and smooth, all you need to do to maintain is give it some fresh "white lithium" about once a month. That's how often I do it on the vic ( aka BACON ) I do the door and hood/trunk hinges, as well as steering linkage ( under the dash too) and hood catch and trunk release door latch with the spray grease. No steering bind or stiffness in a year. Just add to routine maintenance. My steering is smooth as butter.
Put the front wheels in the air and see if you can turn wheels left and right. if they move fairly easy chances are the power steering pump is not making enough pressure or restricted flow of power steering fluid
Its the steering arm, under the hood drivers side, it connects the steering column shaft to the steering gear box. The small universals get really rusty. causes it to bind. don't try to lube them it doesn't work. About $50.00 from ford.
