Power steering does not work.was low on fluid put fluid in then worked for a very little bit.now does not work at all.is it ok to run car with pump not working

i would replace the pump because if the box was bad it wouldn't always be tight

If the belt and fluid levels are correct there is a good chance it may be a bigger problem. The power steering pump may be the fault. At lower speeds a worn pump isn't turning fast enough to push enough fluid. When you REV the engine your speeding up the pump pushing more fluid. Get the pump checked. If that's ok your possibly looking at a problem with the rack itself. ($$$ Ouch!).

Have you checked the power steering fluid level? The reservoir for the fluid will be at the front of the engine, where the belt runs the power steering pump. If it's low or out add a little power steering fluid till full, then start car and slowly turn wheels back and forth from stop to stop-not too ******* the stops (when the steering won't turn further that way...that's what I mean by stops)....Turn wheel one way full travel, then reverse and turn the other way. Check the fluid level again, and add as needed.
If fluid is not low, the belt may be too loose to make the power steering pump work, or you may have a bigger problem that needs professional attewntion.

If the fluid was completely empty, you may still have air in the system. Whining is not good. It means low fluid and could burn out the power steering pump in short order. Turn off the car, Add fluid (DON'T OVER FILL), start the car, turn the wheel a LITTLE bit right and left a couple times to get the air out. Shut off the car, recheck fluid, add and repeat until full. If you still have the whining and no Power Steering, you are FOOKED...

power steering fluid does NOT go anywhere near the boot.but when you fitted a new rack did you turn steering wheel fully left and right several times to prime the rack and then check the fluid.....half a quart is a lot of fluid to add to the system (change your mechanic ASAP)MY BICHON COULD DO BETTER....

YOU NEED TO BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM BY HAVING LOW FLUID AIR ENTER THE SYSTEM.PARK CAR ON SOLID LEVEL GROUND SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS.YOU CAN LEAVE CAR ON GROUND BUT TURNING STEERING WHEELS BACK AND FORTH WILL WEAR SPOT IN TIRES.TURN STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT WITH THE ENGINE OFF.CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID.ADD MORE FLUID IF LOW.MAKE SURE FLUID LEVEL ON COLD MARK ON DIP STICK.THE YOU CRANK CAR UP LET IDLE LITTLE HIGH FOR 15 SECONDS.THEN TURN OFF ENGINE.CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL MAKE SURE ITS ON COLD MARK AT DIP STICK.THEN YOU START THE CAR UP WHILE IDLING TURN STEERING WHEEL IN BOTH DIRECTIONS SLOWLY TO THE STOPS DONT HOLD IN STOP TURN STEERING WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT FOR SEVERAL TURNS.STOP ENGINE CHECK FLUID IF FLUID TAN STILL HAS AIR IN SYSTEM.LET CAR SET A LITTLE WHILE TRY THE BLEEDING PROCEDURE AGAIN.THERE IS A REASON POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LOW CHECK ALL POWER STEERING HOSES AT POWER STEERING PUMP TO THE RACK PINION ASSEMBLY.

your power steering pump is probably bad, or you could just be low on fluid due to a leaky hose to the rack and pinion. tighen any loose fittings. then service it. if this doesnt fix the problem, go to an auto parts store and purchase a fluid suction device,to **** some fluid out into an empty water bottle, cost $8 dollars, and purchase some" Lucas" power steering stop leak. Don't use too much, as this stuff works so good that it might cause it to lock up,it did on me so i just let the pump idle for about two minutes and it worked ...i know all this because i just got finished trying this in my Car which had a daily leak, and i just got tired of filling it up every week. four days now and the pump is much less noisy now, and i put a piece of new carboard under neath the engine to monitor this so called snake oil to see if it worked...and i be Damed! its not leaking, and it steers like a new pump. Remember, only put in about half, if it doesn't fix the leak add a little bit more and this is what i did... i went to a shopping center to were i could go up and down slowly and make a lot of full turns to work the stuff in, Caution: Never ever crank a steering wheel to full position on any car, if you do crank it, you'll hear the pump straining, just ease off it a little, you dont want to damage the pump. If this doesn't fix it, you probably got a defective rack.

Pump is starting to fail. Good news is that it isn't too hard to change. Hope this helps...

If its a whining noise, check the power steering fluid level and fill if low, otherwise you may have a pump going out or a loose belt

No problems or recall notices on the factory or aftermarket power steering pumps at the moment.

These pumps take lots of stress during there lifetimes and, it is very important to make sure that the fluid levels never drop below the recommended level. running a power steering pump low on fluids, can decrease its lifetime dramatically. Considering the fact that, this pump is on a truck, this will make this Paramount that, you should always monitor the fluid level at all times. even if its a new pump, always monitor the fluid levels.

Now, if you drive this vehicle and work it hard, the pump will take a beating and, the life span will decrease a bit. One year life span is quite unusual but, it is also, in the normal range if the vehicle is worked hard.

If you are concerned about the durability of the brand of pump you have purchased, i suggest trying a different aftermarket brand of power steering pump made by a different manufacturer. I would go for a more HD type pump and i would also run a more HD hose assembly as well to increase the lubrication factor.
