The oil pressure switch or sending unit is a unit that receives an electrical signal showing what your cars oil pressure is.And yes it does partially does let you know when there is a problem somewhere in the oil system. For example if your filter gets clogged up your oil pressure will go down and then go up when you accelerate. If there was a leak in the system first you would probably see the leak And if the oil pump or oil pump shaft were to break you would have no oil pressure. So you can see the importance of having an oil pressure switch.I feel there are 2 guages that are important to watch are your oil guage and water temp guage they can tell you allot about how your car is operating.

The oil pressure sending switch either runs oil pressure gauge or turns on light when oil pressure is low. On most cars the light won't come on if your oil is low unless it has a low oil light.

The oil pressure switch is simply a switch that determines if there is enough pressure in the engine. It is connected to the red oil light that goes on when the ignition is first turned on but the car hasn't been started, yet.

If the oil pressure switch or sending unit is detecting not enough oil pressure in the engine, then it will red flag the condition as indicated by the red light on the dash board's instrument panel.

If oil leaks from the engine, check around this sending unit, and also it could be leaking from a rubber seal or rubber or cork gasket around the oil drain pan, or from the valve cover gaskets.

Oil leaks on older engines can develop over time with use or high miles.

Usually, a light on the dash indicating low oil pressure can be caused by low oil level, or oil leaking out to cause this low pressure, or the oil pump in the engine's underside is worn out.

Engine damage can occur within seconds if this light is illuminated, and the engine continues to run as controlled by the driver of the vehicle.

Good luck on this repair.

2005 grand Prix oil pressure light an dinging comes on

1. Check your oil level. If oil level is not ok, correct oil level and find out why oil level was low and correct the problem. (Leaks, bad PCV, Burning oil due to severe engine wear, nobody has bothered to check it for the last 3000 miles, WAY overdue for an oil change, etc.) If oil level is ok, proceed to next step.

2. Remove the oil pressure sensor and install a manual oil pressure gauge. Run engine to verify low oil pressure. If gauge shows that the oil pressure is low, overhaul or replace engine. If oil pressure is ok, replace oil pressure sending unit and retest.

Lots of oil leaking under the Jeep. Down to no oil right now. Rainbow trail, etc. Want to know worst case scenario...ballpark cost to fix, etc.

Could be a simple fix. Have you found where the oil is leaking from? I had a 93 Grand Cherokee that was leaking oil badly and I found it to be the oil pressure switch that was leaking all that oil. It only cost a few dollars to fix. Check exactly what is leaking first to determine what it will cost.

Oil pressure low light came on after oil yesterday.

Make sure your oil filter is not leaking & that your drain plug is not loose. Also there is an oil sender switch near the oil filter. Make sure the wire is connecting good. If this fails you may have to replace the oil sender switch or put another oil pressure guage on it to ascertain the actual oil pressure. Make sure you have enough of the proper weight oil in the car i.e. 5W30. Good luck!

No oil pressure and i just changed the oil pressure switch in a 90 grand prix

You need to put a mechanical gauge on there and check actual oil pressure...problem may not be the switch but in fact there may be no pressure. Does the engine make noise when running? Do you have the correct switch? What was the problem that caused you to replace the switch?

Leaking A LOT of oil - looks like from on top of the filter. It doesn't seem like the lifters are getting oil because they are loud

It could be the oil pressure sensor for the oil light or guage.I have seen this before after age and heat plus vibration could cause it to crack and leak a lot of oil like you describe.Get it fixed asap.It should be easy to unscrew with a wrench or large socket .Buy the new sensor first though so you can replace it once you get the old one out.It leaks alot because of oil pressure from the oilpump pressurizes the rest of the engine bearings. It could break altogether and pump all your oil out and ruin your engine.
