My 1999 Grand Am GT idles weird when i start it and once in a while it will die but start right back up. I had my uncle look at it and we searched through it and he said that the 1st cylinder isnt pulling enough compression. I was just wondering if there was an easier way to fix this, other than the main option which would be to get a new motor. Thanks

May be a burned out exhaust valve.
Fix requires pulling head and valve job. May be expensive depending on the engine and not worth it for the age of the car.

SOURCE: car wants to die

P0461 reads: Fuel level sensor circuit, range or performance problem.

P0463 reads: Fuel level sensor circuit, high input.

Both codes point to changing the fuel sending unit and, I'm sorry to say, isn't cheap. I recently replaced mine and it ran about $300 for an aftermarket unit purchased from O'Reilley auto parts.

SOURCE: 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix Gt not shifting into OD

this trans is the 4T65E. It needs a 4th clutch hub. The splines strip off around 120k or more because they weren't hardened from the factory. The new ones have the hardened splines. The trans needs to come out and be partially torn down. I've fixed alot of these. Change the EPC solenoid while you are there. They wear and hang up causing intermittent harsh shifts

You can drive them forever without changing the hub but you'll never have 4th gear

SOURCE: 97 grand prix gtp starts then immediatly dies

If you have a GTP these engines use a hi output fuel pump. they use a fuel pump resistor located under the battery tray (look up from under the car) This resistor lowers the voltage to the fuel fump when not in boost mode. because of its locatoin it is prone to corrosion. if you bypass the wires and the engine starts and stays running replace the resistor

SOURCE: 1999 Grand Am 3400 v6 misfire.

I was asking about the pushrods because I had this problem with one of these engines that had a bent push-rod. I robbed a push-rod out of an older 3100 and it was just a fraction of an inch longer which bottomed out the lifter. I figured it out by removing the valve cover and loosing the rockers when it was running and it smoothed out. I'm guessing you checked for vacuum leaks already. How about injection pulse on the number 6 cylinder when running. Another thing you could check is running compression. You said you checked compression but did you just check cranking compression or did you check running compression too.

My suv keeps stopping when im turning or at a redlight.battery an brake light pops up right before it stops .Once my uncle said my alternator belt came off he put it back on kind of weird idk how that...

1. Idle air control valve. Sensor type device located on or near the throttle body. "Most likely." Change
2. Throttle position sensor. On the throttle body. Change
3. Fuel filter clogged. Change
4. Fuel injector clogged. Try seafoam in the tank with fill up.

My 99 pontiac grand am wont idle or start i changed head gasket and intake manifold gaskets

First thing I would do is a compression test on cylinders, then fuel pressure test. Make sure your starter relay is good. If it is cranking over but not firing could be fuel relay, fuel pump, and could be as simple as a vapor lock. Spray some starter fluid in the intake, if it fires up for a couple seconds, then tells you not getting fuel, and this narrows down the search to the fuel pump relay, fuel pump.

Now your statement is YOUR CAR wont start or idle, as you can tell that is two different things. Which one is it, wont start at all? or starts then dies because it wont idle?If it wont start, then check the things I just advised, if it wont idle, then that could be plugs, coils, idle arm, fuel filter possibly clogged. List goes on and on. Need to know little more detail of what exactly it is doing, and what you have already checked or tried for me to dissect it down more direct with trouble shooting. I can help you for sure, just little more info needed, or you can go through the list I just said and it will I am sure fix problem once you check and repair or replace as you come across that problem area that is not functioning proper. Thanks Mike

When I start my Jeep it dies out. After starting it a few times, it stays started. Once i put it in reverse it dies out. Once it's restarted i have to quickly put it in drive to keep the motor running.

I had the same problem. I took it to a mechanic and he piggy backed a bad wire around the wiring harness near the coolant reservoir overflow in the far left hand corner of the engine compartment. Now I have a problem with High idle. I'm going to try chaning the idle control sensor and see if it helps.... if this doesn't work, then it's off to the dealership for diagnosis.

Sounds like a dirty mass air flow sensor but the hill thing is strange...Is the tank full when this happens? Could be a filter and would not hurt to change it (often neglected).

Rough Idle and then the veh cuts off

Have you tried cleaning the mass air flow sensor ? Use Qtip and carb cleaner to remove any gunk on the two wires that strech across the inside.
