You will have to take the belt off and then take the bolt out of the center that holds it onto the crankshaft. then You need a "harmonic balancer" puller, It has slots that bolt to the inner part of the balancer and you screw in the big center bolt. As you tighten the bolt it "pulls" the balancer. Here is a picture;

SOURCE: 1999 Ford Taurus. Can see

There is a key way in the crankshaft and the balancer with a woodruff key that keeps it locked in place. The woodruff key resembles a half moon shape. You will have to remove the balancer to see what kind of damage there is and go from there.

Can a harmonic balancer cause a belt to misalign and cause premature belt wear?

If it's clear that the alignment of the belts isn't correct, then your balancer probably is not the problem. You can usually see the harmonic balancer "wobble" as the engine is running if it's damaged, a visual inspection should give you an idea if it's the problem. It would have to be in terrible condition to cause your belt to change position.

Usually this problem occurs after an alternator, water pump, idler pulley, or similar part has been replaced with one that doesn't line up the same as the OEM part that was replaced. This is one of the most important reasons for comparing your core or old part with the new parts precisely, before installing the replacement parts.

Try aligning the belt on all of the pulleys except one (at a time and then switch to leave out another item), this should help you to determine what is out of alignment specifically and then you should be able to measure the difference hopefully identifying a fix.

2001 dodge stratus r/t 3.o liter outside pulley on harmonic balancer fell off. do i need whole new balancer or is there something that came off that holds it on?

ON most engines there is only on pulley as part of the harmonic balancer. It is the on that has the rubber between the pulley and the center bit on the crank. Any other pulleys are normally bolted to this pulley on the center hub piece . I'm thinking that the mount bolts have fallen out.

I have a 2000 nissan sentra my harmonic balance is bad according to a autozone person it moves when the car is on and he told me it needs to be replaced because it has play i need to replace and find out...

The harmonic balancer is integrated with the crankshaft pulley, and if replaced requires taking the bolt out from the side of the 4 cyl. engine.

I would recommend that an experience engine rebuilder perform the service.

Inspect the Harmonic Balancer:

The harmonic balancer (vibration damper) is inspected for signs of wear in its center bore.
  • Also inspect the rubber mounting for indications of twisting and deterioration.
  • The outer ring can slip, causing an out of balance condition. Replace any harmonic balancer that has slipped.
  • With the cylinder head removed and the piston at top dead center (TDC), make a visual comparison. Do the timing marks for TDC on the timing cover and damper appear to be accurate.
  • Be sure the damper is the correct one for the vehicle. The wrong one can be worse than none at all.
  • Sometimes a damper can become loose on the crank. Check the keyway for wear that can result from improper damper installation, the wrong size key, or a loose damper hub to crank fit.
  • Be sure all pulleys are straight. A damaged pulley can force a crankshaft to bend during engine operation.
This is a general guide on replacing the harmonic balancer, but there are other instructions that the rebuilder would follow to actually do the service for you:

To remove the harmonic balancer, the cylinder head and timing cover must be removed and the piston should be at top dead center (TDC).
  • Install the vibration damper by pounding it on, or use a special installation tool.
  • Generally, the damper is installed unit it bottoms out against the oil slinger and the timing sprocket.
  • If in doubt, install the water pump and pulley, and then pound the damper into place until its pulley aligns with the water pump pulley.
  • It is advisable to use the installation tool, because pounding on the damper can cause stress on the crank thrust bearing surface.
  • It is best to stand the engine block on end and support the crankshaft if the damper must be pounded on.
  • Some vibration dampers are not pressed-fit on the crankshaft.
  • Be sure to install a large washer behind the damper retaining bolt on these engines; otherwise, the damper might fly off, causing damage and a safety hazard.

Where is the crank shaft sensor located on a 2001 oldsmobile alero

on the 3.4 liter engine, it's behind the harmonic balancer--you have to remove the crankshaft pulley/balancer to see it.

if you have the 2.4 liter, it's just above the oil filter:
