The overdrive button on the shifter - auto of my sorento seems to be broken. the light does not com on to indicate if i am actually in overdrive or not. and for 2 days the check engine light was on but disappeared afterwards, i cannot tell if it is related or if it just needs another oil change

Stop by autozone or pep boys when light is on . have them check codes while it is still running, it will show what is wrong now, keep in mind if you turn the car off it will reset to factory when started. have them reset codes before leaving this will turn off change oil code for 3000 miles then you know it is not oil change code. they should check it for free.

sorry only ever seen a manual here in spain but it sounds like a solonoid is gummed up underneath,where it would be i dont know .

usually you can reset a check engine light buy disconnecting the battery for about 30 minutes.

SOURCE: removed auto shifter and overdrive wires broke and its stays in 3rd gear all the time is there a way to make iit rewire it to stay in 4th ?

see where the wiers from overdrive go and fix there a switch. all it is a switch. or just connect the wiers together to turn the overdrive off

lots of mazda vehicles have a small button on the shifter, usually on the side or somewhere not very visible. Generally overdrive is actually ON and pressing the button will turn on a light that indicates Overdrive is OFF. since overdrive is kind of a passing gear - if you are going uphill or towing something and do not want the vehicle to shift to a higher, larger gear, you would turn overdrive OFF .

check the fuses first ,, then the switch,, if those check out ok,, have a tranny shop give you an estimate ,, it may be a simple fix but driving it like that will add to your problems over time

Check for the overdrive buttom on the shift lever, you may have simply depressed the overdrive button and that takes it out of overdrive until you push the button again. If that's not it, please describe the shape of the light.

My overdrive light is flashing indicating the overdrive is off
this could mean there is a problem with the transmission,but most times when OD light is flashing it is because the wiring to the OD switch is broken.
is the OD switch on the end of the gear shift lever ?
or does your vehicle have the shifter on console between seats ?
