Hi,
Are you looking for ignition timing or valve timing marks?
The ignition timing is set at 10 degrees BTC. the marks are at the front of the engine and the degrees are scaled onto a raised molding on the plastic timing belt cover. There is a line marked on the pulley. Paint with correcting fluid the 10 degree mark and the pulley mark. Correct timing is 10 degrees BTC.
Before setting, open the diagnostic connector in the engine compartment and using a short piece of electrical wire and bridge between "T" and 'E' If this is not done the timing will not be corrected.
If you've replaced the timing belt and you're looking for the timing marks, the mark for the crank shaft is a raised casting forming a small pointer for the crank shaft which aligns with a groove in the crank timing gear....When looking from above at the relevant section of the engine, it will appear on your right hand side just above the crankshaft timing gear.
The marks for the cams are holes drilled through each and these should be aligned with punch marks on the cylinder head. The best way of doing this job is by using a mirror and illuminating between the cam gears and the cylinder head.
Hope this helps

Rattling noise from timing cover on 1998 Camry LE

A 1998 camary 2.2 has a timing belt, This noise may be due to a bad tensioner or a bad water pump. Although this vehcile has valve clearance if the belt breaks I would get the timing job done a s soon as possible its very easy to do and No you don't have to remove engine... I can send you a diagram of timing marks if you need it. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA.
