I used a regular coke bottle and squashed it so one side was flat, filled it half up with brake fluid and tipped it into the resovoir. Worked great, quick, cheap and easy - no messing about with hoses and funnels. It is a poor design though!

I know it wasn't a very good engineering design, but the brake reservoir is up underneath the cowling for the windshield wipers on the drivers side. The fill cap is on top, and not easy to access. You will need a very flexible funnel (like a tranny funnel) or a small funnel you can add a piece of flexible hose to to reach the fill cap. You should never need to add brake fluid unless you have just replaced some brake pads or shoes. If the reservoir is low it would indicate your brakes are worn and need replacing soon, or there is a fluid leak in the system.

Do you mean the van is actually braking like a Starsky and Hutch move or that the warning lights indicate that they are on? If its lights then you may be low on brake fluid. Maybe a module leak

SOURCE: Replace alternator 2001 ford windstar van

Hi, first you disconnect the battery. then you need to take the belt off by the back pulley. But you don't need to take it all the way off. Just so you get the alternator belt off. I just replaced the one on my 1997. Then you have three bolts, and one small nut to remove . Then put all back together the way you took them off.
Take care

My 2001 ford windstars brake lights won't work. I

There is a brake light switch operated via the brake pedal. Once the switch wears out there is nothing to activate the brake lights. You will have to have the brake light switch replaced if a check of the vehicles wiring for the lighting is shown to be all in order.

Brake light staying on. on my 2001 ford windstar what might it be

check your master cylinderr fluid level. If full brakes may be worn badly or master cyoinder may be going bad.. if brakes are ok change brake sending unit usually located on master cylinder. do noty drive until you are positive your brakes are good. if fluid level is low in master look for brake fluid under car usually on back of wheel.if no brake fluid on back of wheel inspect brake lines for a hole usually rusted through. if this is helpful please leave me positive feedback.

My Ford windstar 2001 cruise control just stop working. it has 107,000 miles. Also, when driving the van sputters, it seem like the brake is being applied but continues to move.

is there brake fluid leaking on the wires under the master brake cylinder? if so you need to call ford about the recall. Its also suspected that this problem causes a malfunction in the abs system.
you can look up your recall info here http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/

2000 ford windstar... electrical mess!!

one reason for that fuse to blow is a bad brake pressure switch on the master cylinder. could be a
warranty/recall item. can also leak brake fluid. also check behind each wheel for any sign of brake fluid,
particularly the rear wheels if you have rear drum brakes. fixed one here recently where the vehicle's jack
came loose in the right rear compartment and short that circuit. make sure your jack is stowed properly.

good luck

Instrument panel not operating

You have a blown fuse. The problem is that there is a cruise control deactivation switch on the master cylinder that gets brake fluid contaminated and shorts out. You will need a new switch and maybe the the connector.

TRANSMISSION

If it is a manual gearbox, use transmission fluid. If it is an automatic gearbox, use Automatic Transmission Fluid. The compliance plate (usually found in the engine bay) will tell you exactly what type to use. But the best way is to just have a look at the bottles in the retailers, and check the specifications written on the bottle to make sure that it is OK for your model. If you have a Ford dealer close by to where you live, ask them for the right fluid, and you can't go wrong then.
