SHIFT PATTERN IS VERY VAGUE, STILL CAN ACCESS ALL 5 FORWARD GEARS AND REVERSE BUT THE SHIFTER IS "SLOPPY"

My 5-speed shifter in my 1991 Capri is sitting on top of the exhaust system. It's no longer attached to the bottom of the car. From what I can see after taking the console out, the mounting plate is still attached to the underside of body. Looking through the hole in the floor, I can also see a plate attached to the shifter itself. I can still shift gears, but I have to hold the shifter up while shifting. What holds the shifter up?

When this happend to me i still had all gears. there is no pin or bolt, the shifter is held in place with epoxy and pressure.. its ****, total ****. i suggest looking at the pdf service manuals on www.techcapri.com and re-building the area that holds the shifter in place. this involves removing the shifter head and leather-ish boot around it (may as well clean it while you've got it off) and then pulling the shifter up into place. then from the underside of the car, inserting some epoxy and or reinforcement brackets (to make it stronger than it originally was) to hold it in place. i used two pieces of 1/8th thick aluminium underneath the little tabs that were originaly glued/pressured into place.

please note the manuals on techcapri are for the 91-93 modles our 94 modle is slightly different, but the manual is still very helpful for identifying parts and how to get at them.

Is there a pin for a gear shifter in a 89 gmc the shifter is slo[ppy and it grinds gointo first

there is a screw in bolt that fits in the ball at the base of the shift lever that can come loose , wear out or fall out
However that has nothing to go with grating gear selections
That is a problem from air in the hydraulic clutch lines, faulty cable if cable action or grease on the clutch face linings or input shaft spigot bearing seized up or dry bush in the crank shaft

Gear shift feels like a pin fell out. Seems to be flopping around. Won't engage in any gear.

Look at the tube the shifter goes into, is there a pin in a hole there? If not find it and reinstall the pin that retains the shift arm to the steering column barrel.

Car wont go in gear gear shift is loose when car is off

If it is an automatic transmission sounds like shifter cable broke or fell off. If it is a standard transmission, depending on manufacturer cable broke or fell off or linkage broke or fell off.

4X4 gear shifter pulled off

It is held on underneath with 2 small 8mm head bolts. They probably rotted and broke off.. You will have to remove the 2 bolts and the big bolt on the side of the transfer case and remove the whole bracket if they are broke off. Only 1 might be broke because I believe the bottom hole on the shifter is slotted and the top one has the hole. Either way you will have to look at it from underneath. Hope this helps. Cobra..

I recently replaced the manual transmission on my 1991 Geo Tracker. A small pin fell out of the shifter box when we turned the transmission on its side. Now the car won't go into 1st 3rd or 5th. What is...

This pin actually goes into the bottom of the shifter and allows it to push and pull the transmission into these gears. You will have to break down the shift box to get this pin back in. I can't find any diagrams online, but, if you go to advance or auto zone they can let you look in a manual.

RECENTLY CHANGED THE AXLE FROMA 4 LUG TO A FIVE LUG. USING THE SAME 28 SPLINE WE CANNOT REMEMBER HOW THE STEEL PIN GOES THROUGH AND FITS INTO THE 2 GEARS ON OPPOSITE SIDE. 1 GEAR ACCIDENTLY FELL OUT AND...

The cross-shaft goes in so that the hole in it lines up with the bolt hole in the carrier. Place one spider gear in contact with the side gears on one side and the other on the opposite side, one at the top, one at the bottom. Rotate the gears into place. before pushing the pin through, put your finger inside each bore and make sure that the spider gear shims are also aligned so the shaft can pass through without interference. then after it's in, align the bolt hole and replace it. Don't forget to put the axle clip back before putting the pin in.

Ford windstar 2001 Gearshift moves but will not shift into reverse. While shifting into reverse a bolt fell out from area where searing column is. How do I find out where it goes. drive works OK

This bolt connects 2 parts of gear shifter. It's getting loose. It's known problem. Look under the steering column. Jiggle the shifter you will see where the problem is.
