My 2003 Taurus acts like the neutral safety switch is bad and won't start unless it is jammed into park or you start it in neutral. Once started, there seems to be a lot of excess play in the shifter lever. Is there a mounting point under the dash that the cable assy may have come lose or do I need to look at something else.

The switch is located at the top of the clutch pedal assembly, above your feet. Its a little cramped, but its a simple dc two wire switch, you should be able to check it with a meter for power and to see if the switch does indeed need replacement. If thats the problem, when you see the new switch, you'll know it goes in, very easy. good luck

OK then the switch is part of the gear selector switch on the side of the trans where the shift linkage hooks up. here is a picture and part number.

most gm nuet safety is yellow and purple .....out of ignition switch is a big yellow wire that is crank out and input to nuet saf switch......out of nuet switch is color purple that goes strieght to start selenoid.....purple wire also goes to the crank fuse 5amp.. in the fuse box under dash... this fuse goes to the pcm main computer.. same for auto and clutch
