Check that as you move the shifter, that the shifting rods beneath are moving in tune with the shifter's position. If not, then your mechanism is faulty. It is almost certain that the issue lies with the external shifting mechanism. The issue may be just beneath the shifter lever, within the rubber or leather bag shroud. You might have to pull out the centre console to have a closer inspection.
a vacum modulator does not prevent a car from shifting into gear. Usually when a car fails to move, internal parts of the transmission break and sometimes shatter prevent the clutch pack from functioning. The purpose of a vacum modulator is to allow the transmission to shift smoothly from one gear to the next, but now on allot of cars these days transmissions are solely controlled by the computer. If you transmission does have a vacum modulator then your will find a steel vacum line from the engine going to your transmission with short pieces of hose connecting the lines together.
The only way in a manual transmission to not be able to shift into some gears but not others is that the syncronisers are bent inside the transmission.
This problem could be related to bad cables or the linkage assembly.Remove the center console and get down to the shifter where you can visually see the cables, and where the cables attach to the shifter. The cables should be hooked up at the transmission, but removed from the shifter. One cable is the neutral gate position, and the other is the actual gear selector cable.Manually operate the cables and see if the gears will engage using the cables. If the cables work, you have narrowed it down to the shifter itself. If the cables don't work and gears can't be engaged using the cables, then the cables are bad. Also look over the shifter assembly visually, look for cracks or broken metal while shifting it through the gears.---------Check it.Thanks.
In your car the computer might control the transmission's shifting. If you are having the same problem with a new tranny, then I would say the problem could either be with a sensor on the transmission, or there could be a problem with the computer.
What you can try is to remove the shift cables from the transmission side. then move the shifter and see if everything is free if it's still sticks then the cables are going to be replaced. if everything is moving with the cable off. then you need to remove the shift tower on the tranny (where the shift cable is I belive it's 5 bolts) remove the tower and you will see the shift pin. Inside the tower there is a cotter pin that breaks and that will cause you to have one gear and unable to selected another gear. If you are not mech inclined I would no attemped the shift tower repaire, the cables do it will save you money. The shift tower has bushings that can fall into the tranny.
Your shift linkage has come undone. Jack the car up and climb underneath. You shift linkage is either com undone from the trans or you shift stabelize bad has come undone at the shift arm.
I had a similar problem except i could shift to first and third and fifth but not 2nd or 4th or reverse. the only thing that came to my mind was new transmission but that is not the case. It was a way i could but it was so frustrated. I am certain it is the shifting cables. The name of the part you need to get is TRANSMISSION SHIFTING CABLES. Only the dealership has them, about $200.00 got them and installed but a certified mechanic. I have no problems shifting into any gear at all. Hope this information helps.
