While driving the temperature gauge goes down to zero at the same time the truck bucks (sputters) and sometimes shuts off, all the other gauges do not move. When standing at a traffic light, the temp. needle shakes then goes to zero and the truck cuts off. What could be the problem?

You could be correct, I changed the temp. sensor in July 2010 and this problem began in December. Thanks.

You have a sensor that controls this. It is a temp sensor. It could be called something else, but it is a sensor that measures your engine temps. It would shut the vehicle off if it is not working properly.

Temperature gauge stays at zero until stuck on traffic then goes to 70 then back down to zero when driving again checked coolant and its fine???

The thermostat housing body needs to be replaced which regulates water coolant through engine to radiator.

How do i stop my 1994 ford explorer from sputtering and shutting down when driving at low speed

Not getting enough fuel. There are two coolant temperature sensors one for the gauge. one for the computer. the one to the computer monitors fuel. When it fails the engine is slow to start the first try and there is a strong odor of gasoline. The engine will run rough at some speeds and sometimes stall.

It sounds like you may have a bad fuse distribution box problem due to the multiple electrical problems. Inspect the fuse box and look for any damages to the fuse box and wire harness, pay attention to the wire harness from the engine compartment to the cabin compartment, look for any damages and corrosion. Star with that to save you some money since time is money and the dealer will just take as much time as they can. Good luck and hope this help. Keep me posted, be glad to answer any questions you may have.

Intermitant temperature

Check to make sure your thermostat works right by monitoring the warming up of your engine. With a completely cold engine, start and run the engine for a few minutes, then put your hand on the top radiator hose to monitor if and when it gets warm as the thermostat opens more and more and note the gauge reading( if it works) the top radiator hose should be unbearably hot within 5-8 minutes. If the therm. opens right it should close right aswell, staying open a little while eventhough the radiator may have cooled may be what you are experiencing causing the rapid cooling and is nothing to worry about. The Hose should not get warm very soon after starting the engine. Regarding you gauge, lets take one step at a time, verify proper op. or the therm.
