Water stains on the upper door trim (passenger side)
I am getting water stains on the passenger side door trim at the top of the window where it meets the headliner. There is no indication of a water leak into the car ... can it be a drain problem in the door and how do I fix it...
The stain is not on the headliner itself ..thought about the sunroof... the stain is on the top of the door itself which leads to think its in the door ...somewhere....The stain is not on the headliner itself ..thought about the sunroof... the stain is on the top of the door itself which leads to think its in the door ...somewhere....

Based on our research the RAV4s with wet floors are usually, but not always, clogged sunroof drains or drain outlets. Other RAV4 owners found that the body trim surrounding their windshield or even the fender panel had degraded and failed, allowing water to seep in during heavy rain.

possible that the water is getting into the car from a failed membrane that seals all the openings under the door trim and /or the drain holes at the bottom of the doors are blocked
fix is to clean out the drain holes and remove the door trim and reseal the plastic back around all the openings in the inner door frame
One piece trim panel is used on styles with standard trim. The custom trim has an upper metal trim panel. The one piece trim hangs over the door inner panel across the top and is secured by clips down the sides and across the bottom. It is retained by screws located in the areas of the top front of the panel assembly.
Remove all door inside handles.
Removing a window crank handle (with a retaining clip inside the handle) without a special tool can be a problem. An alternative method is to take a clean shop towel and wedge it between the window crank handle and the door panel. Move it up, while pulling it from left to right, as in a sawing motion working the clean shop towel until the retaining clip comes free.
Remove the door inside locking rod knob.
Unfasten the screws inserted through the door armrest and pull the handle assembly into the door inner panel or armrest hanger support bracket.
On styles with remote control mirrors assemblies, disengage the end of the mirror control cable from the bezel on the standard trim, or from the upper trim panel on the custom trim. On custom trim, remove the upper trim panel.
On styles with power window or door lock controls located in the door trim panel, disconnect the wire harnesses at the switch assemblies. On the four door sedan and the two door hatchback, remove the switch cover by pushing down at the switch area and pulling down at the bottom of the cover. The switch and base may be removed from the trim with the cover removed.
Remove the remote control handle bezel screws.
Unfasten the screws used to hold the armrest to the inner panel.
Remove the screws and plastic retainers from the perimeter of the door trim using tool BT-7323A or equivalent and a screwdriver. To remove the trim panel, push the trim panel upward and outboard to disengage from the door inner panel at the beltline.
On styles with an insulator pad fastened to the door inner panel, use tool J-21104 or equivalent to remove the fasteners and the insulator pad.
On styles with the water defector held in place by fasteners, use tool BT-7323A or equivalent to remove the fasteners and the water deflector.
On styles with the armrest bracket riveted to the inner panel and installed over the water deflector, drill out the armrest bracket rivets using a 3 / 16 in. (5mm) drill bit.
Tilt the front edge of the glass downward to locate the glass in the door.
Apply pressure rearward and snap the glass rear guide into the rear run channel.
Lower the glass to about 3 in. (76mm) above the beltline and install the widow regulator roller to sash channel.
Run the glass to the full up position.
Place the front glass retainer in position and install the bolts.
Check the window to make sure it operates correctly, then install the remaining trim parts.
yes
clean out the drain holes at the bottom of the door
normally 3 slots near the edge of the door
next get a sheet of clear plastic and using a good sealant adhesive stick the plastic around every opening of the inner panel of the door
That stops water splashing out of the holes against the trim and running into the car
cost
tube of sealer , sheet of plastic and your time
Trim and molding remove tool and a phillips screw driver Drivers Side
Remove
Door trim panel and water shield (top where window is)
Plastic panel around door handle. snaps out
1 screw upper front extension assembly (plastic triangle)
2 screws located lower bottom left (drivers side) and door trim panel
Use remove tool to push out retaining 'C' clip behind door handle
Grasp panel where opening are and pull up and out gently
Now disconnect wire harness
I recently purchased a 2008 BT50 dual cab then 2 days later we had 500mm of rain and of course it leaked :( I had about 80mm of water on the drivers side floor and 30mm on the passenger side floor. I stripped the interior out of the car and started hosing the outside and watching where it was coming in. I took all the windscreen surrounds off and the cowl panel off below the screen there was no water coming in from that area. I had taken the gutter seals off but left the door seals on so the water was running down around the outside of the seals (with the door shut) and out at the bottom. From inside near the drivers side kick panel I could see water coming through seams in the metal work and when I took the door seal rubber off the body on the car I could see water was getting in at the top of the door seal rubber going down the front inside edge of the rubber and getting in through the seam where the rubber push's onto the body of the car (first problem). I took all the door seal rubbers off and run a bead of non corrosive silicon inside the cavity and pushed them back on. It seemed to have fixed the problem I dried the carpet and put it back together..Two weeks later we got another 325mm of rain and it leaked again :( not near as bad this time. Looking at the bottom of the door where the door trim meets the door I could see water coming from behind the trim and then into the car. I took the door trims off and could see water gets in when the window is up (all cars do) and is supposed to run out the drain holes in the bottom of the door but the water was dripping and splashing up to the back side of the door trim against the sheet of plastic that is supposed to seal against the door with the black mastic (it doesn't) and running straight into the car. I cut some plastic and siliconed them onto each opening on the inside of the door frame and then put the factory piece of plastic on as well (properley this time) as a backup. So far so good.
Not comming from the speaker! Make sure that the rubber door trim aound the door is intact and not damaged. Additionally, check the rubber seal on the outside of the window where it retracts into the door. These are the only 2 ways that water can enter through the passenger door.
Did you have the windshield replaced recently? This is typically caused by faulty installation of a windshield. Sometimes it can be fixed by adding windshield sealant (polyurethene, not silicone) where the windshield is adhered to the subframe - most likely along the bottom edge.
lift the bonnet and remove the plastic trim below the windscreen (passenger side) this covers the pollen filter check for distortion this will be the problem. replace the pollen filter it will be damp.if the trimis not too distorted refit or buy new. The trim acts as a rain water gutter and has been fitted incorectley, have you recently had a service ?
