If the idle air control valve is the problem, you most likely have experienced some rough idling of the car while in park and maybe driving, and RPM surges while the car is idling. THIS site provides more info on it.

The tach needle bobs up and down at idle. it goes from about 400 to 1000. any ideas?

Hi:
Your idle speed is computer controlled, thru the IACV, or Idle air control valve. It is bolted to your intake manifold, and has an electrical connector. Many people have tried to remove them and spray them with cleaner to fix them, but most end up buying a new one...

2000 Mazda Protege doesn't idle-just put in new alternater/batter

Check your idle control valve most likely has become faulty; some has better luck and others, it very expensive to replace which new will cost 280-290 bucks, being 2000, I would check on ebay or a junk yard. This part is responsible for the regulation of idle speed; Ensures that the right amount of air flows around the throttle to achieve optimum fuel efficiency and engine performance. do not get from the dealer, 200% mark up on theirs, check with autoparts wearhouse.com

1997 Mazda Protege: Engine has clicking noise when idling.

Check to see if the valve lifters are not making the noise. Turn on the engine and rev it up to about 1500 rpms and see if the clicking is coming from the valve cover area.

2003 Mazda protege had rough idle and wants to stall when I stop.

The idle on my 2003 Mazda Protege started acting strange one day - it kinda surged forward a little bit. Then the RPM would drop and kept wanting to stall out. It stalled out at a stop sign. The check engine light came on. I drove it immediately to my Goodyear mechanic. It ended up being the Idle Air Control Valve. They had to order the part from Mazda which took 3 days to get there. The whole thing cost $700. Runs great now (again).
