The ETS light is the warning light for the Electronic Traction Control. Check Engine light indicates there is a problem with the emissions system. Take the vehicle to Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilles, or Pep Boys and have the ECU scanned to see what codes comes up. The code will tell your what part is being effected.
The ETS light comes on usually in responce to a cooling system problem in Cavaliers. The first thing to do is check your fuses. The Check Engine light always comes on when the ETS light comes on. You need to be concerned with this ETS system first. Usually it is your 30 amp fuse that needs to be replaced. On most cav's the fuse box us under your hood, on the right hand side. There are two fuses that are for the coolent system. Check these fuses first. If the fuse is blown, change it and the dash light should go out. If the fuse blows in a week or so again, then try to read the codes like the guys above say. When the fuse it out, the code reader is just going to say that you need to check your fuse. This is what happened in my car, and my mechanic said it was pretty common in these cars. Good luck.
Hello there let me try to explain it the best way i can
If you are talking about the light coming on when you are driving in
slippery conditions, this is normal. If you are talking about it staying
on all the time, the ets is either turned off or you have another
problem.
Let?s take a moment and explain why the electronic traction control
which is called Enhanced Traction System (ETS) warning light will turn
on when the engine computer
sees a problem. The ETS system monitors wheel speed via the Anti-lock
Brake System (ABS). If the ETS system sees a wheel spinning due to snow,
ice, rain etc., the ETS computer sends a request to the vehicle?s
engine computer to reduce torque. The engine computer responds with a
combination of strategies. In the engine computer?s bag of tricks to
stop wheel spin it can perform any one or combination of the following;
cut fuel off by trimming or turning off fuel injectors, ****** the spark
timing or up shift the transmission. In the days of old we just let up
on the gas pedal. Now the computer does it for you. If you have an
engine running problem it is more of a problem than you realize. The
engine computer is the high command center. The engine computer will
work and respond to information from the other computers in the vehicle.
But in the event there is a system or running problem that the engine
computer is responsible for, ?it will? lock out all of the other vehicle
computers. If there is an engine running problem that causes the engine
computer to store a code and turn on the ?Check Engine? light guess
what computer doesn't talk to the others? The engine computer. The ETS
computer gets all put out when this occurs and turns its warning light
on in protest. So, there you have it. If the check engine light is on
the ETS warning light will come on as well and the ETS system will not
operate until the engine computer problem is corrected.
On certain issues that cause the 'check engine' light to come on, the 'computer' shuts off the 'Electronic Traction System' (ETS) to save power incase it is needed due to the issue. The main thing to focus on in this situation is why is the 'check engine' light on. You can go to your local auto parts store and ask them to check what code(s) is being given. Once the issue that is making the 'check engine' light is fixed then the 'ETS Off' light should also turn off.

Check engine light is for telling you that there is A problem with the fuel injection or emissions system, Most of the time there is no major problem to really wory about. ETS is the light for the Enhanced Traction system (traction control) This is not A vital component of your car. If these two lights come on together then the extra traction sensor is broken and needs to be replaced when the sensor is fixed the check engine light will go off and the ets light will work properly again.
the ets light will come on when you have a driveability problem it would be the best bet the check the dtcs and fix those for the check engine light first clear everything then drive it.
