The grand caravan should have a diagram showing the proper placement for the serpentine appropriate to your engine. There is usually a sticker showing the belt placement and travel direction on the front most engine cover (plastic splash shield over the radiator). You will likely require a special tool to loosen the tensioner so that you may easily replace the belt. Do not attempt to do this without the appropriate diagram and path.

If the belt is still making noise or slipping you can purchase an upgrade belt which has traction grooves on both sides, this is a commonly needed solution for the grand caravans.

What engine do you have? The 3.3 and 3.8 engines have a single serpentine belt, and a belt tensioner, so no adjustment is needed. Did you replace the tensioner, and want to know how much to torque it? countrycurt0

How do I bypass a/c on 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Question moved from Television and video to Dodge Grand Caravan category.

'disconnect tunes and such'?? 'tubes'?

You disconnect everything and you fit a Bypass Pulley. This enables you to use the same size belt and it keeps the serpentine belt routing the same.

Removal of the AC compressor is half of replacing it. There are videos here.

During heavy rain my belt comes off

Hi,

Thanks for writing to Fixya.com.

In such cases you need to check the belt tensioners. Take the bolt out of the center of the tensioner, should come off at this time, align peg of new tensioner with hole, replace bolt, put breaker bar or ratchet in square hole and put the new belt on. If it’s the serpentine belt then. its advised to replace the idle pulley bracket to align the pulley better with the belt. But it only applies to 96 to 98 models. Mine is 99 grand caravans 3.3, supposed with new bracket, but still has the problem. I saw two other occasions on the web complaining about this (drive in deep snow, through puddle). Use extra cautions when in any of these situations.

Thanks for contacting Fixya and please accept the solution if it has helped you.

2006 Dodge Gr. Caravan. Loud humming noise upon

Misalignment of the belt, incorrect belt, worn or loose tensioner, Too tight of an adjustment (many service centers do this on purpose so when the belt breaks in it becomes properly adjusted, I do not believe in this philosophy), The belt is actually one long belt called a serpentine belt.....

Serpentine belt slipped off. 1998 Dodge Gran Caravan 3.0 litre 6 cylinder

On this particular model of the 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan I determined that the upper hose from the water pump had slipped off and anti-freeze squirted on the serpentine belt causing it to slip off. Once the belt gets slick it never stays on. I replaced the belt by loosing the tensioner which is the idler pulley located in the center of the configuration, A big thanks to user motor1258for the configuration diagram.

Belt Tensioner replacement

A simple bolt on assembly, the tensioner for the serpentine belt may need replacement if it fails to smoothly pivot and maintain tension on the belt.

Using a half inch breaker bar, release tension by rotating against the spring, remove the belt from the tensioner. Unbolt the tensioner (one bolt may be so diffucult to reach that you might want to use a racheting open end wrench by Alden.
Install the new tensioner by reversing these steps.
I usually replace the belt at the same time.

Need to replace the alternator

There should be a spring loaded pulley with either a nut or a square hole for a socket drive to turn it and take the spring load off of the belt while you change it.

The belt routing diagram is shown on a decal located on thehorizontal metal support above the radiator and under the hood support rod (passenger's side near the coolant overflow tank).
