On 1996 VW JETTA,The thermostat is located at the engine end of the lower radiator hose
(passenger side). If the car has power-steering, then power steering pump and
mounting bracket are to be removed to get to the thermostat housing. The
thermostat is at the end of the bottom hose, in the water pump housing. Follow the lower radiator hose to the water pump
housing. There are three bolts that are very difficult to navigate around. The
thermostat is located behind those bolts.
----------------- Thank you.
Look the lower hose from radiator going to the engine, near the intake manifold, below the housing for the water pump and it cover by the alternator. so need to remove the alternator to have access on it.

Its to the right of the water pump towards the bottom of the engine.. Follow your lower radiator hose. Make sure to get some G12 coolant from VW before you do it. If you mix the coolants they turn into a gel that will cause you to overheat.

SOURCE: how can i check the level of my transmission fluid
Assuming it is an automatic. With engine idling, put transmission thru all gears, put back in park, keep engine running, check dipstick for tranny. If it is a manual then you have to crawl under car and remove upper "fill" plug on gearbox, fluid will be up to that level. NOTE: unless your tranny leaks it should never be low!
