After you remove the tire, the drim should slide off. If it doesn't then try using a rubber mallet and gently tap on the outside edge as you pull on it. Sometimes you also need to tap on the drum in the center part. I have sprayed penetrating lubes like WD-40 or PB Blaster into the seam at the center. You may also have to back off the parking brake cable or even use the adjuster to back off the shoes.

Hello,

To replace the brake drum of Your 2003 chevy cavalier, please follow the steps below,

  1. Ensure You take off the negative terminal of the battery,
  2. Identify Rear Brake Shoes and Wheel Cylinder Components. About half of all car manufacturers still use drum style rear brakes. Drum brakes are not as efficient as disc brake systems but, drum brakes are easily produced and can be used on the rear of a vehicle since only about 30% of the braking is performed by the rear brakes. Rear brake shoes are more difficult to service when worn and may require special tools to service. Rear brake shoes performance is more affected by water and rain; the braking ability is greatly compromised. Full braking ability will not return until fully dry.
  3. Removing the Brake Shoes and Wheel Cylinder. Remove brake drum to inspect brake shoes for wear. If the brake material is less than 1/8 inch, they need to be replaced in most cases. Check the wheel cylinder for leaks. Remove the dust boot from the side of the wheel cylinder and check for brake fluid leaks. If brake fluid is present the wheel cylinder needs replacing. Also check brake shoe hardware, return and mounting springs, and replace if damaged or broken.
  4. Removing Brake Shoe Mounting Springs. Use the brake spring tool to remove the return spring to each of the brake shoes.
  5. Removing Wheel Cylinder. Hold the rear of the retainer pin. Insert brake shoe removal tool over retainer clip, press down and twist counter clockwise. Remove spring and retainer. Inspect and replace as needed. Then remove the rear brake shoes and remaining hardware. Match the old brake shoes to the new brake shoes. Both sets should match up exactly. Then transfer hardware to new brake shoes.
  6. Reassemble With New Brake Parts. After the rear brake shoe and hardware pieces have been removed, install line wrench onto brake line at the wheel cylinder and loosen the mounting fitting, then remove it. Note: brake fluid will leak from line when loosened. Remove wheel cylinder mounting bolts and replace wheel cylinder with new unit. Re-attach and tighten brake lines and retighten wheel cylinder mounting bolts. Then clean and lube the brake shoe backing plate. Reassemble with new brake parts and make sure all the brake hardware is mounted correctly. Note: when changing rear brake shoes, only disassemble one side at a time so you always have a reference copy on the side that is still together.
  7. Adjusting Brake Shoes. After brake shoes have been installed they need to be adjusted. Normally they are self adjusting but the first time after installation, a primary adjustment must be made. After installing the brake drum and spinning it on the bearing hub, adjust the brake shoes to lightly contact the brake drum and recheck regularly. After the brake shoes are adjusted, bleed the brake system until free from air and leaks. Test brake system before driving.
  8. Do not move the vehicle until normal brake pedal operation is present.
Hope this helped. Thank You for using FixYa!!!

why do you remove the battery cable on a brake job? That is not necessary.

SOURCE: 2000 chevy cavalier back brake drums

Hi

I am sure there are 2 holes between the studs that are threaded, and you can screw a bolt in to each of these, to ease off the drum.

If this fails, a little heat from a gas blow torch, and tapping with a hammer should do the trick.

Before refitting, the give hub flange, and centre hole edge a rub with emery paper, and put on a slight smear of copperslip grease on the drum hole edge, to prevent same happening next time !

Good Luck

Don´t forget to give me a rating if I helped please !

John.

SOURCE: my 2003 chevy cavalier check engine light keeps

go to autoparts store and use their scanner to scan the computer and get the code. you may have to wait until you can catch it back on again. You can try resetting the computer by disconnecting battery for 30 minutes and see if that works first

Testimonial: "I knew that but thanks for the help. I,m way out in the woods too far to autozone or anywhere else without a good reason forgot about the Batt. reset"

SOURCE: Trying to repair back drum brakes on a 2003 chey

OK, that's a common problem if the drum is not installed while bleeding the brakes by pushing the pedal down all the way.

looks like you need a new wheel cylinder, because of this.

unfortunately.

don't worry, gm aftermarket parts are inexpensive. Probably less than $5 for the part.

The brakes on my 03 Cavalier (rear brakes) freeze up in snow or rain...I check and they don't need replaced but something is seriously wrong with the rear brakes...during dry weather they squeak or squeal.

They may have been installed incorrectly. You may have the drums rusting. Have the drums turned & at least a new hardware kit installed properly. You may also want to change the shoes. Good luck!

Describe your 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier 'I have a 2003 chevy cavalier. The car stalls each time i stop! When i start it each time the car stays at an idle!what would cause that? thanks'. Problem

sounds like a leak in the brake booster, but i'm not sure that car had one. if you have a larger booster canister between your firewall and master cylinder, remove and replace the bushings and hose that come from the booster and see if that solves your problem. if it doesn't, you may have a bad brake booster causing the vaccuum leak that is killing your car.

Chevy Cavalier 2001 ABS Brake problem

You don't say what brakes.

I have had many cavys and worked on them. Great cars.

Your problem sounds like a **** rear wheel cylinder and bad drums/rotors and abs sensor wire.

My car just did everything you describe, I put in new wheel cylinders, drums, brakes, rotors, and 2 new rear brake lines. For less than 200 bucks the car is like new again and has well over 100k.

You can do it yourself. Doesn't take special tools. I followed online how-to's.

I have a 2002 Chev Cavalier that had the same exact problem. I replaced the bulb harness (purchased from a chevy dealership for around $5) which was fairly easy to do. I have had zero problems with it since.

How to put front breaks on a 1999 chevy automatic cavalier

Place the bike on a stand, disconnect the cable, remove the wheel, set the wheel brake side up, use the bolt slightly inserted in the drum, or two oposing screw drivers around the drum to pull it from the wheel. Once pulled, remove the springs and shoes, lightly sand the inner drum on the wheel, install new pads and springs, spray both drums with brake clean, reassemble drums and wheel, install the wheel, and then adjust cable tension and brake pressure at first the wheel, and then at the bars. Test and readjust as needed.
