How much should it cost to replace the ignition wiring harness located in the stering column? Its on a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire SE. When I turn the key nothing happens but everything else in the car works. A mechanic said it was the starter and the ignition wiring harness in the stering column. I know a starter cost right around $95 dollers but what about the wiring harness?

SOURCE: pontiac sunfire

I had that problem last year. I bought a new starter but it was not the correct one for my car. For the 98 there are two different starters. I bought the wrong one the first time. My step father started to put it one and realized it was not the same as the one he just pulled off. Ending up taking it with us when we returned the orginial one I bought. The orginial one I bought was about $70 the correct one was $400. The auto store did not have the correct one listed as a replacement part. Until the number off of the part was keyed into the system and found out that it was just not the common replacement part.

Starter solenoid , or wire that leads to it.

Also , if standard transmission , may be the switch on clutch pedal is intermitant.

Engine won't turn over unless it thinks you have your foot on the clutch.

Where is the Theft deterrent module located on a 1997 Bonneville?

How did you determine that ? Have a factory scan tool an check data parameters ? Do electrical testing ? If you don't know where it is how could possiably test it . The most common problems with this anti-theft system is that the wires coming from the ignition switch break . There are contacts inside the ignition cylinder that read the resistance of the pellet on the key . If you look under the dash on or around the steering column ,find wiring for the ignition lock cylinder . Should have two white wires inside a yellow or orange sheathing . Check resistance of the pellet on the key ! Stick the key in the ignition ,now check resistance at the wires . If read no resistance , a wire is open . You can buy a resistor of same value an solder into the harness . Not the ignition cylinder side .

How do i replace a ignition lock cylinder on a

Not really a job for a non-mechanic. Column covers off, switches out of the way, wiring disconnected, column dropped down under the dash, bolts chiseled out, big job.

Fob lost and antitheft wont let me start pontiac sunfire

Locate the immobilizer unit. This is a black box, usually situated under the dash close to the steering column. Trace the wires from the immobilizer to the vehicle's wiring harness, and where the original harness was cut, remove the immobilizer wires, and reconnect the original wires. Most fitters simply disable the ignition or starter circuit at the ignition lock wiring and this can easily be reversed.
A professional repair centre or auto electrician may only take less than half an hour for a job like this.

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. we pulled the key out of ignition without the car in park. the cover "Button" on shifter had gotten stuck under it. now the Steering wheel is locked, the Key will...

The key is most likely OK. So is the shifter. I would bet a $100.00 (that I can't cover) that the shifter is in a console "on the center of the floor". If so, the "electric/mechanical switch that you key cylinder actuates when it turns is on the top of the steering column, above the brake pedal. You will have to drop the column down with the 2 1/2 nuts, holding the column up to the dash, after the plastic cowls are removed. It will have a cable, that goes from the "electrical" switch, to the console. to activate/deactivate, the button on the shifter that depresses. Once it breaks, usually cloumn will lock "open" or "locked" .......no in between.

Can not turn key 1997sunfire but can take out of ignition

Sounds like the lock tumbler is bad...If it is the one I'm thinking of it is fairly easy to replace...if it has a small wire harness on it you will need to re-arm the security system after replacement by leaving the key in the "on" position for 15-20min 'till the light stops flashing before you can start it.To get it out though, you may need to wiggle the key around 'till you get to turn. Check a manual and take a look at it by removing plastic column shroud, to make sure it is accessible.

Changing ignition on my 02 sunfire

remove the stering columns plastic covers & it will expose the ignition lock
unplug the wiring loom & unbolt it [2 bolts]
they ma be original bolts that the head breaks off so you cant unbolt the [antitheft system]
if they are then you will neeed a steel punch & hammer to start them turning out!
