SOURCE: ticking of 5.4 l triton motor on a truck iam about to buy
pritty much. The lifters are making the sound. Chevy motors do it as well. I do not like it but both manufacturers say it is ok. I do not hink they should have metal on metal like that. The only 2 things that the triton was known for is the head gaskets leaking from the head on the rear passenger side of the motor down on the starter and coolant leaking from the heater core hose down on the passenger rear coil and spark plug. Good motors they seem to run for ever.

Incorrect grade fuel, problem with the engine control system. Fuel injection system faulty, improper or damaged spark plugs or wires. EGR valve not functioning, vacuum leak, faulty knock sensor. I don't know where you want to start. I think the easiest thing is to change the spark plugs and plug wires. Also check for vacuum leaks. If you still have a problem, clean the EGR valve system and replace the hoses. Then if you still have problems take it to a reputable shop to have it properly diagnosed.

Either low oil pressure, weak oil pump, or bad or stuck camshaft lifters.
