Hello! I seen some of your posts on here, and i'm hopeful that you may be able to help me out. I'm soooo lost as to what is wrong with my car, and how to fix it. Here's the problem....
First, I have a 1997 Cavalier RS, automatic, 2.2 engine. The car has the PASSLOCK anti theft system (original, not Passlock II)..
I had trouble almost a year ago with the PCM/Engine computer, and bought a new one from Autozone - they ofcourse sent it out to have it flashed for my specific VIN. After replacing the PCM, and doing the "Turn the ket for 10 minutes, then start" thing, it started, and everything was great!
Until one day, driving down the road, the PCM literally fell out of the car, and was ran over, twice. =/ This, ofcourse, damaged the PCM, and the engine wiring harness.
(I had the most difficult time ordering a new PCM from Autozone. First, I had one on order, had to borrow a car, and drive 50 miles to pick it up - only to find that the part was somehow not shipped, the order wasn't completed! So... I called another Autzone, in another town, and before going to pick it up, I called ahead, and again.......it didn't come in. So, finally... The part came in at the original store, and I got another ride to go pick it up.)
The PCM was hooked up, along with the wiring harness that I had to buy at a salvage yard (the original snapped when the PCM fell out - and the only place to purchase new is dealership, at around $1200!!! ....So, I had to go with the salvage yard).
The OBD II was reading "P1336", crankshaft relearn required? So.. Tried everything, nothing was working. The car would turn over, but not start, not even for a second or two. The anti-theft light would come on - not flashing, just staying on steady.
I then took this PCM back, thinking it may have been defective. This PCM has been hooked up.. The OBD II no longer reads "P1336". It finds no trouble codes at all... But.. The anti-theft light is still staying on steady. Now, the "check engine" light is also on.. And same deal, it turns over, with no start!
The "turn the key to ACC for 10 minutes, try to start" has been tried.. I'm so lost.
This is my only car, and it's been sooooo difficult being without a vehicle!
Any advice would be very much appreciated!! =)

Dont know if this is like my 97 Z24, couldnt start it, turn over but no start. wires were burnt in the harness to the ECM, had that traced and fixed, and after that, needed a new steering column with ignition and pulsar injection done as well as programming from GM for the column. steering column was because my passlock could not be bypassed. this may or may not be the same problem i had... my problem started because my ground wire came off my starter (which short circuited the system when i started it)
there is a very simple way of bypassing this annoying anti theft. The GM dealers don't want to tell you because they want you to spend a bloody fortune on your car and money in their pockets.
Take the shroud off your steering wheel. Under the hood, take the fuse out for your airbag so it doesnt' pop out on you. Look where your key goes in, there should be a 3 or 4 really tiny wiring harness that goes to the ignition switch. Turn your key to the "on" position, cut the "yellow" wire and this will bypass the whole anti theft system. Disadvantage is your anti theft light will stay on but if it bugs you, just put a piece of black tape over it. Problem solved.

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, this did not work. I took the car to the dealership today (had to tow it *sigh*) and they pretty much told me I should sell my car for scrap metal. =(
They said I have to buy a new wiring harness, from them, and it's over $3000, then add in fees, labor...
He said it's the wrong harness, and it's wired wrong. Wow.
If you want to read all the details, they are on two of my blog entries, on the link below.

You may have to relearn the passcode 3 times before it will take. When you leave the key on for the APPROX. time of ten minutes you want the sec light to go off and then shut the key off and do it again. 3 times. Try that and let me know. Thanks...Dan

Wiring diagrams can be found online, however i believe you can re-learn the key by leaving it inside the ignition tumblen and switch it to accesory. Then disconnect the b attery for about ten minutes and then try starting the car without taking the key out.

Try this first, it takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted, be glad to help
SOURCE: I have a VERY intermitent/passlock - no start
Common for the ignition lock switch it self has gone bad and will need to be replaced. This is more common if you have lots of keys on your your key chain, the extra weigh wear out the electrical sleeves in the cylinder walls making the passlock not to read the proper resistor reading on your ignition keys and needs to be reset all the time. My In-Laws had the same problem with there Grans Am and was at the deal once a year for it. Once the warranty ended I got the passlock 2 by pass for around $70.00. The factor alarm still works but the ignition immobilize was disabled so they would not get stranded out in the cold. Here is the link and good luck, keep me posted and it's just a plug and play so there is not wire cutting and splicing. Keep me posted and don't forget the rate. http://www.gmpasslock.com/

Your Passlock may need to relearn the ignition keys, if the
ignition lock has gone bad like my in-laws Grand Am Gt, here is what i
did so they will not get stranded any more. Buy a Passlock by pass
module for around $70.00. You can order one from GMPASSLOCK.COM in the
mean time try resetting the Passlock. Good luck
Ignition keys relearn takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure
1.) Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2.) Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start.
3.) Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF.
4.) Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds.
5.) Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes.
The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock
Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from
OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle
learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the
next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the
ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
6.) Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password.
7.) With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles.
Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself.
SOURCE: the stupid passlock!!!!
Take off panel on steering wheel. on right side next to where you put in the key there are some wires plugged together there. Try to get it started it will eventually. While the car is running...Just unplug them. Your anti theft light will stay on but it will start.

The powertrain control module (PCM)
The body control module (BCM) contains the logic of the Theft Deterrent System. The BCM provides the battery positive voltage to operate the Passlock?"¢ sensor. The BCM also measures the voltage of the security sensor signal circuit. The voltage measured will indicate whether the Passlock?"¢ sensor has been activated and whether the resistance value from the sensor is a valid value or the tamper value. If voltage measured is in the valid range, the BCM compares this voltage, voltage code, to a previously learned voltage code. If the voltage codes match, the BCM sends a class 2 message containing a password to the powertrain control module (PCM). If the voltage codes do not match, or the voltage is in the tamper range, or there is a circuit fault, the BCM will not send the correct password to the PCM, and the vehicle will not start.
The body control system consists of a BCM and it's associated controls. Battery positive voltage is provided to the BCM from CLSTR fuse in the Fuse Block-left I/P. The module ground is wired to ground G201. The BCM is wired to the Class 2 serial data communication bus as well as discreet input and output terminals to control the functions of the vehicles body !
Now then Karen what problem is your vehicle having , no start an SECURITY light flashing or on solid ?

Thank you for your help.
I have tried abotu everything, and towed my car to the chevy dealership today.
They pretty much told me to sell my car for scrap metal (dead serious).

I have a1997 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2 manuel and my car tries to start but wont. My anti theft light will not go off now. I have checked for spark I have no spark. I had bought a ignition moduler and tried some advice like unplug the battery , put the cables back on wait 10 minutes then try to start it. It finally reset it self I guess and was working. Now its doing the same problem again and will not start. help me possibly find the answer to this.Please.
