Too answer your question it is not just a precautionary thing if light came on it means the computer saw a problem, however the problem can be as simple as a loose gas cap which wont affect the way the vehicle runs, or over filling the fuel tank stuffing in that last .25 all the time.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

I strongly suggest that you have the car diagnosed. If the check engine light is on there must be a faulty sensor somewhere and having it scanned will show the fault code. By then we'll know what sensor should be replaced.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma V6 Pre-Runner, which I purchased new. I am experiencing sudden surges in the engine speed at some very unpredictable times. I was backing into my drive way and shifted th

Surges can be from vacuum lines. Check them. Especially the rubber parts. If they are collapsed or soft/spongy, replace them. Next I would clean the mass air flow sensor and the inside of the throttle body.

Check engine light on my 2003 SR5 V6 came on. What is the cause?

The check engine light could come on for numerous problems. Sometimes, It's the oxygen sensor gone bad. I believe there are two of them located under the vehicle. Sometime you can find them and just pull the connection apart and blow dirt or anything out of the connection and hook it back up. Most times, you have to replace the sensor or sensors. If the check engine light is blinking, there is another problem besides that. I would try that first or go to a mechanic and let them run a computer test on your vehicle. That should not cost much and will take less than 10 minutes. This is a very vague answer in the many check engine light problems, but it's a start.

Hello you will need to have the check engine light checked with a OBD2 engine scan to retrieve the engines fault that causes this missing and do the necessary repairs.assuming and guessing it could be one of ten switches my guess is good as yours. Most garages usual charge $25.00 up to $75.00 for this scan this is the best most efficient way and most inexpensive.

you don't have a reset button but what you can do is chk for vacuum going to your egr. chek the "vacuum switching valve" VSV and see if you have an "EGR vacuum transducer" those are 2 very common problems with toyotas

750 is fine but from a professional view, you should always replace with what the manufacturer recomends

1999 toyota tacoma Sr5 won't start

Check for fuel pressure when starting. Fuel pumps have a check valve in them that keep fuel in the rail at the injectors. If the check valve fails, the pump has to pump fuel all of the way up to the engine. Same thing with hot no-restarts. Fuel pump.
