My 1986 Nissan 300zx wont start and run. It starts then sputters till it dies. If you play with the gas pedal it will run for longer but wont stay running. I replaced the fuel regulator, ignition coil, spark plugs/wires, and air value control sensor. I think it could be a sticky valve issue.

My first instinct tells me the Idle Air Control Valve would be a good place to start.

Lets assume you have CLEAN and water-free gas. You have spark. Now INSPECT your distributor cap for "tiny" hair-line cracks! It's a low cost item so I would replace it anyway so you know the status of most of your spark plug chain.

NEXT be SURE your car is TIMED correctly!
Your timing may have jumped a tooth!

Check for fuel compression, gas filter and try, a gas treatment, you buy it at auto zone the gas treatment is suppose to clean the jets . if you think is a valve issue then you should give it a compression test I would use the type gauge that screws to the piston hole and check each piston for compression.
good luck.

I am working on a '86 300zx that will die randomly. It dies less often while idleing however if you attempt to accelerate hard it dies. The car will then sometimes fail to start. I can hear the fuel pump...

how dose it die dose it sputter or just die out right. have the mass air flow checked. I would sugest to invest in a chilitons repair manual for the year and model. You might even get lucky and get one for you local libery.

If the car idle on high rpm check if when you will step on the gas pedal over 2500 3000 rpm the car will start shaking and the will die if thats happening then check your mass air flo sensor ,or if there is no air leak that avoid the mass air flo sensor
