Why ask why ? If you had factory service repair info. you could do the diagnostic procedure for check engine light staying on - no code's stored . Can the scanner view engine data ?
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Diagnosis
Circuit/System Description
Ignition voltage is supplied to the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). The engine control module (ECM) turns the MIL ON by grounding the MIL control circuit.
Circuit/System Testing
Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the instrument panel cluster (IPC).
Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit and ground.
?‡'
If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the ignition circuit fuse is open, replace the IPC.
Connect a test lamp between the control circuit and the ignition circuit.
Command the MIL ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
?‡'
If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.

If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
replace the gas cap.. unless your car loss power when u give it gas.. and when u c a hill and it does not have power.. then its not the air mass flow sensor.. however u did everything but the gas cap
if cam sensor is bad, it will use more fuel. if light is on check with a scanner to find problem code. sometimes check engine light does not come on. and also make sure air filter is clean, this will cause the engine to burn more fuel because it can not get enough of air through air filter. check filter first.
Probably carbon build up on a sensor. Had this happen on a Ford Expedition. I put it on the highway and hammered it several times. It blew the carbon off the sensor. Light went away.
Sometimes can be prematurely dirty air filter, sets off the air flow sensor, which sets off the o2 sensor. So might try new air filter first and erase codes and then see, before you spend more bucks than you need; then if codes return, do the flow mix sensor.
The check engine light has nothing to do with the oil, water etc. it signals that a fault has occurred in the engines electronic controls and it has failed a test of some system that the cars computer runs every few minutes while the engine is running, it can be one of a 100 different systems that made the light come on, take the car to a Kragen Auto parts store or another chain parts store like it and ask them to run a OBD 2 system test (it's free), this will retrieve the trouble code(s), post the code(s) back on this thread and I will explain what it will take to repair.
You need to check the fuel pressure, and also was the fuel filter changed? Another part that will cause this is what is known as the Mass Air Flow Sensor, it is located in the rubber air intake hose to the engine, it has a multi-wire flat connector (gray or black) going to it, a quick way to check proper function it is to disconnect the wiring from the MAF sensor and drive the car, if the MAF is the problemt the hess. will go away, this will cause the engine lite to come on and is onyl a test, you will need to replace the MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor). One other question when you say the light is on, is that the check engine light? if so is there a trouble code stored in the power train control modules memory?
thats a code for an air fuel metering 02 sensor "a/f sensor" make sure you got the right one in u might have got just an 02 sensor instead of an "a/f sensor" hope this helps also is it a dx ex 6 cyl 4cyl?
