I have an Audi 2006 A6 4.2. While driving at low speeds in Drive the transmission goes into Safe Mode which is 3rd gear. it has happened 3 times in the 5 months we have owned the car. A computer diagnostics showed an event occurred, we had an update in the software but it happened 2 times since. The problem is also that when the car is turned off and sits for a while and you restart it, it resets itself. what do you think? Sincerely, Puzzled!

SOURCE: I BROUGHT A AUDI 2000 A6 4.2 SAFE RADIO

Turn on radio - the word SAFE will appear in the display. Press th P.SCAN and RBDS buttons simultaneously and hold them down until "1000" lights up in the display.Release buttons.Do not, under no circumtances, continue holding them down or press them once again. This will cause the radio to consider the number 1000 to be the input code.Use station buttons 1,2,3,and 4 to enter the code number on your Radio Card. Use the button 1 to enter the first number 2 for the second number 3 for the third number and 4 for the last number.Once you have entered the code and it shows on the display, press the P.SCAN and RBDS buttons down again simultaneously and hold them down until the word SAFE appears in the display.Release buttons. Enter the radio code, take your car to the dealership with proof of ownership and they can get it for you, you should have it from the previous owner or if you bought it new, to enter it, hold the pscan and rbds buttons for a few seconds, then numbers will show up, press the corresponding buttons to change the numbers, when you have your code in, hold pscan and rbds buttons for a few seconds. when you release the radio should unlock, good luck

SOURCE: How do I change the passenger headlight bulb on my 2002 Audi A6?

Here you will see the left headlight we are going to take out, but the same procedure can be applied also to the right one (click will open a bigger photo in a new window)
audi1small.jpg

First, remove the cover circled in green (just take it, it is not fixed with screws), then, with a Torx screwdriver, remove the two screws circled in red
audi2small.jpg

Cover removed
audi3small.jpg

Under (yes, almost hidden) the cables circled in red and yellow there are two more Torx screws, you don't need to unscrew them all, only make 2 or 3 rounds
audi4small.jpg

Particular of the screws under the circles in the previous photo (sorry for the bad focus)
audi5small.jpg audi6small.jpg

Last, we have to remove the power connector. To remove it, pull the little plastic block lever circled in green and then, while holding it, pull out the whole connector (in red). After that the headlight is free, and you can take it out from the chassis
audi7small.jpg

Et voila', headlight removed :) Red circles are for the vertical offset control, don't touch them unless you know what you're doing. Lights are located under the black plastic covers

Audi A4 B7 tiptronic gearbox driving in park mode

It is not recommended to drive an Audi A4 B7 with a tiptronic gearbox in park mode. The park mode is intended to be used when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is turned off. When the vehicle is in park, the transmission is mechanically locked and the wheels are prevented from turning. If you attempt to drive the vehicle while it is in park mode, it may cause damage to the transmission and other drivetrain components. It is important to ensure that the gear selector is in the appropriate gear for the vehicle's speed and driving conditions before attempting to drive. If you are experiencing problems with the gearbox or are having difficulty shifting gears, it is recommended that you consult a professional mechanic for assistance.

What does it mean when my 96 Lincoln Continental won't shift from 2nd to 3rd gear and is it safe to drive it like that?

It is safe to drive but the car is running in too low a gear at high speed and this will result in greater engine wear and lower gas mileage.

You have a transmission problem.

2006 BMW 750 Li My dynamic drive inactive light came on, then a generator fault light came on

BMW has been using electronically controlled automatic transmissions in most models since the late 80s. These transmission systems employ a transmission control unit which controls electrical solenoids to manipulate the various control and shift valves and functions in the transmission valve body. When the transmission control unit detects a problem that it thinks could be damaging to the transmission or engine, it goes into a fail-safe or limp mode. In this mode, the transmission will function in reverse normally, but in forward it will operate in only one gear (whether you have the shifter in D, or any of the lower gears). This will typically be 3rd or 4th gear, depending on the model. It will start in this gear and stay in this gear with no shifting. You would experience this as sluggish acceleration and higher than normal engine speed at about 40 mph and above.

If you must drive the vehicle when the transmission is in the fail safe mode, accelerate gently and keep the road speed lower than full highway speed.

Earlier models do not employ fault codes and must be diagnosed manually. Late models do employ fault codes and a diagnostic/scan machine can be used to check and read the faults to assist in diagnostics. Note that this is not your common OBDII engine management fault code tool. This is what A BMW dealer or a properly equipped independent shop would have for full vehicle system diagnostics and coding operations.

My 1998 beetle is stuck in 3rd gear. the engine and coolant light is on any suggestions?

This just happened to me. I drove the beetle in the snow and slid up to a stop sign. The slide engaged the anti-lock brakes. After that, the car was sluggish starting out and would not shift into 4th gear.
Turns out, the transmission was stuck in 3rd gear. If you can believe it, this is by design! It's a fail safe mode that gets triggered by the wheels spinning out of sync.
According to my mechanic there are wheel speed sensors on each wheel. If the computer senses the wheels moving at different speeds it will drop into fail safe mode. This requires a special scan tool to clear the codes.
Once the codes were cleared, ran like new.

I have a playmouth grand voyager 1999 3L,my transmission will not shift up in gear.On drive or reverse it goes well but will not shift.I think it could be an electrique problem, cause the transmission looks...

Your trans is stuck in safe mode, you are only using 2nd gear, this means it is not shifting but staying at a gear so you will not damage the trans. This is an electrical setting , however usually comes from the computer receiving bad information , rough shift, however it can be reset. Remove the positive battery cable for 30 minutes then see if it shifts, also check your fluid level, it can go into safe mode from low fluid if you made a turn and the trans slipped from low fluid . If your trans goes back into safe mode again have it checked, most important, do not drive over 45 mph or allow your rpms to raise over 3 , I have seen many motor problems that spawned from this type of trans problem, if not corrected.

Good Luck

1991 bmw 520i transmission goes into 'safe' mode

quoted from BMWE34.network
" Transmission locks in "limp" mode - 3rd gear so you can "limp" home or to your nearest dealer."

"Things to check before even contemplating a transmission overhaul:
Check electrics - Alternator and battery.
Replace DME Relay and Fuel Pump Relay - not expensive.
Remove disassemble, clean and reassemble gear selector switch - If it looks beyond saving, replace ($200)
Service the transmission ($130 from a specialist) and check/replace transmission speed sensor ($90)"

Popular Problems Checks
1. Car will not go into gear:
  • Gear selector cable has failed
  • Brake lock solenoid has failed not allowing the gear selector to move out of "Park"
  • Excessively low transmission fluid (note: if car is operated for an extended amount of time with low fluid level the transmission will fail prematurely)
  • Shorted electrical component not allowing the PCM to control the transmission. Example: shorted fuse
  • Flex plate (flywheel) is broken completely not transferring engine power to the transmission.
2. Car goes into gear but then fades out of gear or is slipping while driving:
  • Transmission fluid is low
  • Transmission clutch discs or bands are worn out or burned
  • Faulty transmission shift solenoid.
3. Car goes into gear but does not shift out of first:
  • Blown fuse to the PCM controller
  • Faulty vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
  • Shorted second gear control solenoid
  • Faulty transmission controller (PCM)
