I start my 1996 camry le in the morning, it start right up then the engine shuts down. I restart the engine, hold the excellerator down maintaining 700 rpm for one minute or so, let off the excellerator and the car idles fine. what could the the problem and the fix? Sal

have you check your coolant sensor?it may be accting on you, theling your compurer the car is hot and thats why you have to press the gas to keep it alive until warms up,\.

check for fuel leaks, fuel pump fault , faulty pump line on the car. When you had stopped the fuel within the system may be draining off and the fuel pump is not holding on well. check this out
Is it coming from the driver side, passenger side, front or rear of the engine? It could be a cam or crank seal if it is coming from the passenger side behind the plastic timing cover.
check your alternator belt if its good check your battery with a volt ohm meter engine off it should read 12.1-6 volts start car should read 13.3 nothing lower than this if higher 14.and above alternator is bad if lower than 13. altnator is not charging the battery.
Local mechanic determined engine was flooded and started it by holding throttle to the floor and cranking 5-7 seconds - then the engine sputtered to life. It has run perfectly before and since and I'm at a bit of loss to understand why this occurred this one time - so far. It's been driven now 5 days with no problems.
a squirel or other small rodent type got in under your car and chewed right through your gas line and so your motor cranks but no fuel gets to it because its all leaking out of your knawed gas line, causing that gas smell. either that or an angry ex- got under your car and snipped them.... or it could be your fuel pump.
