2003 Expedition rattles when the car gets warmed up, then once you get over 40 it stops. It does't rattle all the time, and sometimes it rattles when the car is idling. My husband thinks it is coming from the exhaust system. He has been under the car with a mechanic stethascope. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The smell of fuel is worrying and likely to be a small hole in the fuel tank or the fuel lines. It can be fixed with epoxy putty if you can find it. It needs to be fixed ASAP.
Could be cam chain rattle. Famous for sloppy chains and inferior tensioners. Starts about 100k and downhill from there. Could try an engine flush as tensioners may be sludged. I have a 4.0L with a rattle at start up but stops after 5 seconds. Chain is shot.
Hello, Have someone check the metal shields around the exhaust pipes and Catalytic converters. What usually happens is the shields rust off their spotwelds or pieces of gravel get kicked up on them and dance across the surface.
Check the driveshaft "U"-joints. When in reverse, the joints have Torque in the opposite direction than normal. If there is wear or slop in the joint, the part will rattle when the driveshaft turns.
Last would be loose or broken motor or transmission mounts. The engine is lifting off the mounts and rattling.
I hope it is only the shields as a muffler shop can reattach them and eliminate your noise.
I have this on my 2003 Expedition also. The doors get "loose" on the hinges and they can be adjusted at a garage. I have mine tightened every few years - usually when it's in for other service - the charge is minimal.
catalytic converter is probably rattling, they do that when they are on the way out, performance will be effected, as it block's, engine cant exhaut properly !
The noise you prob heard was the rear brakes. Sometimes when you get them wet they will rattle and or get stuck for a few moments. did you use your emerg brake when pulling the boat on? it could just be the e brake arm or cable rattling.
Check the heat shields on the exhaust system. They get loose from the
extreme heat fluctuations work loose and rattle. Especially the one
between the engine and firewall where the 02 sensor screws in. It
probably rattles less after warm up because heat causes expansion which
makes it tighter. Hope this helps.
